It's 1958, after business hours, and what's happening in the
Georgia Center TV studio doesn't look or sound much like University
business. Sweating under the lights, a young guitarist with long
sideburns squints at the control room window, takes his cue from the
engineer, and jumps into a rockabilly riff. This demo is Clark's shot
at the big time, and he and his drummer are taking no prisoners. One
minute and fifty-eight incendiary seconds later, "Time Keeps Rolling On"
is down on tape.
Who was Clark? Since he never did make the big time, at least under
that moniker, all we know is that he was one of a number of Athens-area
performers who cut rockabilly, country & western, and girl group tracks
in the Georgia Center studio.
Time has kept rolling on, and now all that remains of Clark is a
scribbled name on a tape box and a couple of tunes that sound as wild
and free as anything to come out of Sun Records that year.
