Program Overview

The Fourth Annual Conference on African-American Families will focus on public policy and practice issues and the implications for African-American children and adolescents. The presenters will provide information on current research, policy, and practice and will examine how these issues impact African-American children. Centering around primary areas of public policy and practice, the roundtable presentations will provide for an interactive exchange of ideas and information and will focus on identifying effective interventions and strategies that promote positive outcomes for children. This conference brings together social work practitioners and educators, alumni, and the community at large. Program participation will support the building of partnerships between and among these constituencies.

Keynote Speaker

Robert B. Hill, Ph.D.
Dr. Robert Hill is currently Senior Researcher at Westat, a research firm in Rockville, Maryland. Previously, he served as Director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University, Senior Research Associate at the Bureau of Social Science Research, and Director of Research for the National Urban League. Dr. Hill has served on several high-level panels including: the U.S. Bureau of the Census Advisory Committee on the African-American Population in the 1980 and 2000 Census and the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Child Development Research and Public Policy. Dr. Hill’s publications include: “The Strengths of Black Families” (1972), “The Strengths of African-American Families: Twenty-Five Years Later” (1997), and “Social Welfare Policies and African-American Families” (1997). Dr. Hill received his B.A. in Sociology from the City College of New York and his Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University.

Luncheon Speaker

Aaron Smith, Ph.D.
Dr. Aaron Smith is an Associate Professor of Social Work and chair of the graduate program in the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida, Tampa. Dr. Smith also served as an Adjunct Professor of Social Work at San Jose State University and was a member of the clinical faculty at Stanford University Medical School where he served in several different capacities. Dr. Smith’s primary scholarly writing and research interests include: high-risk mothers who are addicted to crack cocaine and the impact of this addiction process on their children and the intergenerational care-giving tasks of grandmothers as parents to their crack cocaine addicted/exposed grandchildren. Dr. Smith received his MSW from Howard University and his Masters in Public Health and Doctorate in Medical Sociology from the University of California.

F. A Critical Look at Substance Abuse Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment Services for African-American Children and Youth

As a result of attending this conference participants should be able to. . .

  • Demonstrate an understanding of current public policy and practice issues related to services for African-American children and adolescents.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social worker’s role in positively affecting public policy.
  • Identify effective treatment options and interventions for African-American youth.

Registration is limited. To register, complete the enclosed registration form and mail it to the address as shown. You may also use fax or phone, or you may register at www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/conferences/index.html. Prepayment by March 17 is required to guarantee your registration.

Agencies paying for participant registration with an agency check or purchase order may fax registrations with a notation that purchase order and/or check will be forwarded. Please include purchase order number if known. Registrations received by March 17 will be confirmed. After that date, call Nancy Breme at 706-542-1272 for directions and additional details.

Continuing Education Credits

The University of Georgia School of Social Work has approved (5) core hours for social workers. The University will also award .5 Continuing Education Units. The University of Georgia is approved provider #4050 for the National Board of Certified Counselors.

Program Cancellation Policy

The Georgia Center will gladly issue full refunds for cancellations made by 5 p.m. ET, March 28, 2000. No refunds will be issued thereafter. Substitutions are encouraged. In the event a program is cancelled for any reason, the Georgia Center will not be responsible for any cancellation changes/charges assessed by airlines or travel agencies.

The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is a full-service, residential adult-learning facility on the campus of The University of Georgia.
