GOLD/GALILEO Annual Users Group Conference

Agenda | Keynote Speaker | Presenters | General Information | Special Needs | Registration

Purpose

The GOLD/GALILEO Annual Users Group Conference draws librarians, paraprofessionals, and technical staff from academic libraries, public libraries, schools, and special libraries throughout Georgia and the Southeast. The goal of the conference is to provide a forum for continuing education and professional development activities related to using Georgia's interlibrary lending and resource sharing network, GOLD, and the statewide virtual library, GALILEO.

This year our conference sessions wrestle with the impact of today's technology and popular culture on the delivery of library services. Will libraries survive — and even flourish — as core enablers of the digital and information communities they serve? Will collaboration bring libraries even greater power, synergy, and responsibility? This conference will illustrate how Georgia libraries can and must stand together to drive their own collective destiny. Change — technological and otherwise — is inevitable, but transformation is by design. Come help design your library's role and celebrate its unique place on Georgia's information landscape. On August 4, GOLD and GALILEO will help you embrace the future!

Keynote Speaker — Dr. J. Richard Madaus

Richard Madaus is the Executive Director of the College Center for Library Automation, Tallahassee, FL, and has overall responsibility for the Library Information Network for Community Colleges (LINCC), a statewide centralized automated library system serving the 28 community colleges in Florida with their 73 campuses in 63 cities. LINCC provides Florida's one million community college students with access to a union database of statewide community college library holdings and a variety of electronic information resources. It also provides operational support enabling circulation, cataloging, acquisitions, and serials functionality at the local institutional level.

In addition to numerous national and regional presentations concerning the economics and technologies of the information marketplace, library development, library automation, and distance learning, Dr. Madaus has consulted internationally with the Ministry of Education in Indonesia concerning Internet and academic library development as well as with Australian library automation development projects. He has also consulted with other states in the U.S. at various stages of their approach to large scale statewide library automation activity.

"Popular Culture, Technology, and the Future of the Library"

Abstract: Want to download the latest bestseller to your iPod? No problem, says our keynote speaker Richard Madaus, people are doing it every day. How about checking your e-mail while rushing between flights at the airport? Still not a problem. Why not grab a high resolution color photo of you and the conference speaker from your camera phone? It's easy!

Madaus says today's technology landscape assumes universal and instant messaging. Examples he cites include Blackberries, advanced storage technologies, e-mailed voice messages, digital faxing, iPods, Bluetooth, WiFi, MP3 players, camera phones, and streaming video cell phones.

"Where do libraries fit in all of this?" Madaus asks. "Are libraries players or merely spectators? Will today's libraries survive in this age of rapidly changing technology?"

"We will survive," he predicts. "We can be important players, but only by really understanding the information seekers behind the shiny gizmos - particularly today's tech-savvy youth - who consider these technologies as just part of their everyday lifestyles."

Where is technology headed? What's hot now, what will be hot in the future? Who is using this technology, how are they using it, and how should libraries respond to this environment? Libraries must find answers to these key questions, Madaus feels, to continue to remain relevant for tomorrow's tech-focused users.
