SiMS 2003, a software tool developed by ForesTech International, LLC (www.forestech.us), allows the user to evaluate different management regimes for stands of Southern pines with and without cultural treatments such as herbaceous weed control, fertilization, thinning, and hardwood release. The software can be used for planning purposes on bare ground stands with minimal inputs such as base site index and planting density or on existing stands from which inventory data can be input and the stand projected into the future using different cultural treatments and management. The main purpose of this course is to insure that attendees become proficient in the use of SiMS 2003 and will be able to use the software to help in the development of timber management plans for timberlands throughout the Southern U.S.
Equipment Needed: All attendees must bring a Windows-based laptop computer with SiMS 2003 loaded on it. A 30-day demonstration version of the SiMS 2003 can be downloaded at www.forestech.us. If you can not download the software prior to coming to the course, a demonstration version of the software can be loaded on your machine the first morning of the course.

- Foresters who must make management decisions for clients. This software will allow the forester to evaluate the product yield and financial aspects of many different management regimes, ranging from very extensive/low cash input to very intensive/highly capitalized regimes.
- Landowners who are involved enough with the management of their lands to feel comfortable with the choices being evaluated.
- Real Estate Appraisers who must project volumes and values to appraise timber and timberland.

The fee for this course is $395.00, which includes lunch, refreshment breaks, and instructional materials. There is a $30 discount for fees paid by check or credit card and postmarked by January 31, 2006. Preregistration must be accompanied by check, purchase order, or credit card number to guarantee a place in the course. Limited seating is available.
Transfer Fee: The Georgia Center will charge a $50 processing fee for a second course transfer, if applicable.

- Learn how to use the SiMS 2003 growth and yield system to evaluate timber management regimes. All presentations use tables and charts and the software is Windows-based point-and-click.
- Learn how to evaluate different possible ways to manage your stands and focus on those treatments and timings that make big differences in product yield and value.
- Learn how to evaluate the effects of "saving money" by not spending on some cultural treatments. Learn how to evaluate the effects of "saving money" by not spending on some cultural treatments.
- Learn how SiMS 2003 can help you produce the most professional timber management plans you have ever considered.

Barry D. Shiver and Bruce E. Borders are professors of forest management at the University of Georgia Daniel B. Warnell School of Forest Resources. Barry and Bruce have both been involved in forest research aimed at quantifying the effects of different silvicultural practices on the growth and yield of Southern pines over the past 20 years. They have published their research work in more than 50 research papers that detail efficient management techniques. They developed the models and adjustments for silvicultural practices that SiMS uses to make predictions and projections and have been active in teaching short courses across the Southeast for the past 14 years.
