Woodland Security


purpose
Through their participation in this program, participants should develop greater understanding of the range and scope of potential financial crimes in woodland operations. Participants should receive new ideas regarding cost effective methods of reducing the potential for financial crimes in their woodland operations.

Topic areas include:

  • Concepts associated with financial crimes
  • How landowners reduce the potential for financial crimes — owning and selling timber
  • How timber buyers reduce the potential for financial crimes — buying and receiving timber
  • Controlling timber harvesting activities
  • Controlling and protecting the business — the role of foresters, managers, administrators, auditors, and investigators
  • Other crimes in woodland operations and the role of law-enforcement agencies
  • The time and place for remote video surveillance
  • Eight simple rules for allowing financial crimes to occur

Who Should Attend?
All those with responsibility for, and financial interest in, woodland operations should consider attending, including landowners, timber buyers, timber sellers, logging contractors, accountants, administrators, attorneys, and managers and realtors involved in and interested in the buying and selling of forest products, timber, and timberland.

Instructors
Tom Kazee graduated from West Virginia University in 1976 and Pepperdine University in 1980. His professional career includes 8 years as a forest manager on the coasts of North Carolina and Virginia, as well as 15 years as a woodlands auditor. He is a registered forester and a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Association of Consulting Foresters. Tom is president of Woodland Security, Inc.

Woodland Security, Inc., is an independent woodlands audit firm dedicated to reducing the potential for financial crimes in woodland operations. Clients include Wachovia, Molpus Timberlands, Georgia-Pacific, Plum Creek Timberlands, Resource Management Service, and others. Based near Jackson-ville, Florida, Woodland Security, Inc., operates intensively across the Southeastern United States, providing assessment, training, process improvement, routine audit, and video surveillance services.

registration fee
The fee for this course is $225, which includes lunch, refreshment breaks, and instructional materials. There is a $30 discount for fees paid by check or credit card and postmarked by October 23, 2006. Preregistration must be accompanied by check, purchase order, or credit card number to guarantee a place in each course. Limited seating is available. Transfer Fee: The Georgia Center will charge a $50 processing fee for a second course transfer, if applicable.

Professional Ethics in Forestry
This optional one-hour course focuses on case studies to illustrate the place of ethics in the practice of forestry. It meets the ethics requirement for registered foresters in Georgia.

Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Con-ference Center & Hotel, which is located on the beautiful, historic campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
