In a study of recent graduates of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, we found that the use of GIS by natural resource managers was evenly split between two software products: ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS 9.x. While both of these are developed and marketed by the same company (ESRI), they are quite different in look and in capability. Successful natural resource managers need the confidence to be able to communicate to others GIS needs, and to perform the basic GIS processes. This two-day course:

1. Introduces the basic features of ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS 9.x.
2. Teaches techniques for addressing a number of basic natural resource management applications.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

Understand the basic differences between the two software products;

• Be able to perform many of the basic GIS tasks used by natural resource managers (query, edit, overlay, etc.).;
• Create management-related maps that effectively display critical information

Natural resource management professionals who have little background with GIS, yet have an interest in learning the basic aspects of two of the most widely-used GIS software programs for natural resource management. Upper-level managers who need to communicate GIS-related requests with field personnel may find the course useful as well.

The course follows a directed laboratory and case study format. Most of the material will be presented in a step-by-step manner, so that the class can follow the directions provided by the instructor, and simultaneously use them on individual computers in a computer lab. The class is evenly split between ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS 9.x. Day 1 emphasizes ArcView 3.x, and many GIS-related concepts are introduced during this period of time. Day 2 focuses on the use of ArcGIS 9.x. Some handouts will be provided to summarize the material presented.

Pete Bettinger is an associate professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. He has more than 20 years of operating, teaching, and research experience in forestry and natural resources, including roles with the U.S. Forest Service, several forest products companies, and Oregon State University. Dr. Bettinger has taught several courses on forest measurements, forest planning, and harvest scheduling, as well as GIS applications in natural resource management. In 2004, McGraw-Hill published his book Geographic Information Systems: Applications in Forestry and Natural Resources Management. Dr. Bettinger earned BS and MS degrees from Virginia Tech; and a PhD from Oregon State University.

Jeff Hepinstall is an assistant professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. He has more than 15 years of teaching, and research experience in natural resource management and landscape ecology. Dr. Hepinstall has taught several courses on landscape ecology and GIS applications in natural resource management. In addition, he has developed methods for delivering these classes via distance learning. Dr. Hepinstall earned a BA from Colgate University, an MS from the University of Minnesota, and a PhD from the University of Maine.

The fee for this course is $445, which includes instructional materials, two luncheons, and refreshment breaks. There is a $50 discount for fees paid by check or credit card and postmarked by July 23, 2007.
