The trend in forest management in the Southeast over the past two decades has been toward more intensive management of Southern pines. Though they may want the investment returns that come with intensive forest management, many landowners are reluctant to manage in a way that reduces wildlife numbers or quality. This workshop will focus on how to get the most returns from intensive management and still have abundant, healthy wildlife populations.

This course will be invaluable for forestry professionals, including consultants, forest managers, and wildlife biologists. The course will benefit the forest landowner with an interest in pine plantation management, especially the landowner with an additional interest in wildlife management.

Barry D. Shiver and Bruce E. Borders have been teaching continuing education short courses across the South since 1989 on a variety of topics related to their instruction and research at the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (Barry is now Professor Emeritus). As professors, they taught classes in timber management, inventory, silviculture, and mensuration. Courses taught by Barry and Bruce are popular! They deliver outstanding technical content in an understandable and enthusiastic manner and always from an operational rather than academic viewpoint.
Karl V. Miller is a professor of wildlife ecology and management at the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Karl's research focuses on the habitat requirements and management of white-tailed deer and on the impact of forest-management practices on deer and other wildlife. He is the coeditor of the book Quality Whitetails: The Why
and How of Quality Deer Management and a coauthor of the book Forest Plants of the Southeast and Their Wildlife Uses.
