National Outreach Scholarship Conference

Acknowledgement to the Founders of the National Outreach Scholarship Conference

In 2001, Penn State Vice President James Ryan, Ohio State Vice President Bobby Moser, and University of Wisconsin-Extension Chancellor Kevin Reilly came together to sponsor the first Outreach Scholarship conference. At that time they stated, "The partnership between our three institutions and the conferences that come out of it will help all colleges and universities achieve greater levels of engagement....Our goal is to provide practical tools for implementing real change in higher education."

Their vision has been realized as the partnership has expanded to include

  • nine partner institutions;
  • participation of faculty, students, and administrators from more than 75 institutions in the annual conference;
  • pre- and post-conference sessions for emerging engagement scholars, and for focused engagement discussions;
  • the development of collaborative scholarship on topics related to institutionalizing engagement;
  • the strengthening of existing, and the development of new, peer-reviewed print-based and on-line scholarly journals focused on the scholarship of engagement; and
  • the establishment of regional and national recognitions and awards for exemplary engagement projects.

Thank you to these engagement leaders who, through their passion and vision, have brought real change to higher education and to communities.
