The University of Georgia offers the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Online Certificate Course. This eight-week, online program explains Lean Six Sigma methodologies and helps you become certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Topics covered follow the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Green Belt body of knowledge. The program includes:

  • audio presentations with corresponding visuals 
  • asynchronous discussion boards
  • weekly, instructor-led, live Web sessions to discuss Six Sigma topics
  • modules on the Six Sigma philosophy, DMAIC methodology, graphical analysis tools and statistical methods
  • a case study addressing regulated industries, manufacturing problems, R&D, marketing and office operations

What is Lean Six Sigma?

It combines several methodologies:

  • Six Sigma is an enterprise-wide, project-driven quality improvement approach that emphasizes a systematic approach to problem solving and making decisions based on data. Six Sigma results in increased customer satisfaction, improved quality and reduced costs.
  • DMAIC is a five-step methodology used for projects aimed at improving an existing business process.
  • Lean is a method that concentrates on reducing waste by improving work flow and eliminating mistakes.

Together, these methodologies provide companies a powerful means to delight their customers and improve bottom-line results. Initially implemented in manufacturing firms, Lean Six Sigma techniques are now being used by hospitals, educational institutions, banks, retail operations, insurance companies and other service-related industries to reduce waste, improve customer service, and reduce costs.

Online. Eight weeks of audio presentations with corresponding visuals, supplemental materials as downloadable.pdf's, and weekly, instructor-led Web meetings. Students will also interact with each other in an asynchronous discussion board. 

Once-a-week live classroom sessions with the instructor will be on Monday evenings 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. These sessions will be archived for later viewing if the student is unable to participate in these live meetings.

Continuing Education Information: 

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and will receive a University of Georgia Certificate of Completion that awards 4.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Dr. Mary McShane-Vaughn holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and an MS in Statistics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a BS in Industrial Engineering from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan. She is currently Principal at University Training Partners, a company that develops and delivers Lean Six Sigma training for corporations and universities.

Dr. McShane-Vaughn has created and delivered Yellow and Green Belt training courses to hundreds of faculty and administrators in the University System of Georgia. She is currently engaged in developing and delivering Lean Green Belt and Black Belt training for a top tier, private university in Georgia.

Previously, Dr. McShane-Vaughn was a faculty member at Southern Polytechnic State University for 8 years. There she directed and grew the Master of Science in Quality Assurance program and taught Statistics, Statistical Quality Control, Linear Regression and Design of Experiments in the graduate program. Her research interests include industrial statistics, robust experimental design and distance learning course delivery methods.

Before her career in academics, Dr. McShane-Vaughn worked for 15 years as a quality engineer and statistician in the automotive, medical device manufacturing, consumer products testing and revenue management industries.

Dr. McShane-Vaughn is currently the Six Sigma Black Belt Exam Chair for the American Society for Quality, and is a member of the Georgia Oglethorpe Board of Examiners, Georgia's equivalent of the National Malcolm Baldrige Award. Dr. McShane-Vaughn is a senior member of the American Society for Quality and the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and a member of the American Society for Training and Development, American Statistical Association and the American Society for Engineering Education. She holds ASQ certifications as a Six Sigma Black Belt, Quality Engineer and Reliability Engineer.
