to Learning in College

Video Series Available Via Satellite, Workshop for Georgia Public School Teachers in October

In addition to full knowledge of a variety of academic subjects, college-bound students need practical, down-to-earth strategies about how to study, how to learn, and how to succeed. Some first-year college students who enjoyed academic success in high school may suddenly experience difficulties when faced with college academic work.

"Transitions To Learning in College," a video series with supplementary materials for teachers and students, is designed to help high school teachers and administrators prepare these students for the college experience. In addition to ten 30-minute satellite programs offered via PeachStar Education Services, "Transitions" provides a Web page at www.georgiacenter.org/transitions, a Student Activities Packet, and an Instructor's Guide to reinforce concepts and strategies presented in the videos.

The primary goal of the series is to provide students with essential tools for becoming as successful in their first year of college as they were in their last year of high school, to help them become independent, self-regulated learners. Presented are study strategies and other practical methods for creating a climate for academic success in college.

The episodes of "Transitions" were created to be entertaining and informative.

Topics are:

  1. How High School Differs from College
  2. The BCAs of Reading and Studying
  3. Writing to Show Understanding
  4. Metacognitive Strategies
  5. Rehearsal Strategies
  6. Preparing for Objective Exams
  7. Preparing for Essay Exams
  8. Note-Taking During Lectures
