Bennett Evelyn, Nancy, manager of the Photography Unit, was recognized by the University Photography Association of America, receiving "First Place" in the "News and Features" category for the "Principles of Excellence" brochure photo; "First Place" in the "Photo Feature" category for the series "Personal Best"; and "Fifth Place" in the "Photo Feature" category for the Georgia Center's exhibit booth at the 1994 annual meeting of the National University Continuing Education Association (NUCEA).
Brewer, Pat B., head of the Department of Evening Classes, was elected president of the Georgia Association for Women in Education for 1995-1997.
Cahoon, Bradley B., coordinator for technology-based education with the Department of Community Learning Resources, completed requirements for a Doctor of Education degree in adult education from The University of Georgia.
Copas, Ernestine M., associate director for academic credit, served as chair of the National University Continuing Education Association (NUCEA) Awards and Honors Committee.
Delaney, Joseph, director, State Financial Management Program, Governmental Training, was named "Outstanding Instructor," by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for courses offered in Idaho.
Field, Richard C., acting department head for the Department for Program and Conference Development, served as a charter member of the Certification Review Board of the Society of American Foresters (1994-1996) and was named adjunct associate professor in the Daniel B. Warnell School of Forest Resources at The University of Georgia.
Hale, Charles D., coordinator of academic programs, Department of Evening Classes, was listed in Marquis's Who's Who in American Education, 1995-96 and was named to the Editorial Review Board for The Health Educator and the Journal of Wellness Perspectives.
Hargis, Jerry L., associate director for communication services, served on the National University Teleconference Network (NUTN) Advisory Board and is chair of the National University Continuing Education Association 1996 Annual Conference Program Planning Committee. In July 1995, Hargis received the "1994-95 J.O. Grantham Leadership Award" from NUTN.
Heaton, Ruby P., senior administrative secretary in the Division of Academic Credit, served as chair of The University of Georgia Staff Council and as chair of the Executive Committee of the Staff Council.
Jackson, Michael G., director, Financial Management Program for Local Governments, Governmental Training, was a participant in the Local Environmental Management (LEM) Project in Hungary, a multifaceted USAID-sponsored international project.
Maner, E. Gordon, associate of the Financial Management Program for Local Governments, Governmental Training, received an "Award for Outstanding Contributions to Law Enforcement," from Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, Spartanburg, S.C., September 1994.
McLaurin, Sylvia R., public service associate with the Department of Evening Classes, served as editor for Practicum, a publication of the Georgia Association of Adult Educators.
Miller, Martyn J., head of the American Language Program, served as president of Georgia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Georgia TESOL).
Mills, Helen H., head of the Department of Community Learning Resources, received a "Walter B. Hill Award for Distinguished Achievement in Service" from The University of Georgia and was inducted into PALLADIA, the highest women's honor society at UGA.
Simpson, Edward G., Jr., Georgia Center director and associate vice president for services at The University of Georgia, began serving as president of the National University Continuing Education Association (NUCEA), 1995-96.
Smith, Jerry Ann, health program specialist with the Department for Program and Conference Development, received a "1994 Student Literary Award" from the Georgia Adult Education Association (GAEA) for her dissertation Perceptions of Equity and Job Satisfaction in Continuing Higher Education. She also was elected to the board of directors of GAEA.
Valente, Janet S., program specialist with the Family and Consumer Sciences Program Section, was awarded the JSI Rural Health Research Scholarship, recognizing the "Georgia Injury Prevention Program" and was named the "1995 Georgia Home Economist of the Year" by the Georgia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
The Georgia Center's Department of Marketing Services received several awards from the National University Continuing Education Association (NUCEA) in the 1995 "Marketing and Promotion Awards Competition." These were: two "Gold Awards,"one for the "Meet Your Match Game," and one for the Georgia Center's Exhibit Booth, which were produced for NUCEA's national meeting in Atlanta in 1994; and an "Award of Merit," for the "Masters Hall Performing Arts Programs" brochure. Also, the Department of Television Services was awarded a "Non-Credit Program of Excellence Award" from NUCEA for "Quality of Life: A Series of Nationwide Aging and Arts Therapies Interactive Video Teleconferences."
WUGA-FM received a record number of awards. The show "Berlin Calling" was recognized as follows: named first place in the "Best Documentary" categories of three associations -- the Society of Professional Journalists, the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. The Georgia Associated Press awarded the program second place in the "Best Documentary" category. Also, in July 1995, "The Bigger Picture" received a "1995 Cultural Olympiad Regional Designation Award in the Humanities," along with The University of Georgia Humanities Center, from The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG).
Other WUGA-FM awards were: "Best Newscast," first place for a newscast during "The Commons" of 9-23-94 from the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated; "Best Documentary," second place for an hour-long feature profiling veterans, aired on Peach State Public Radio on Veterans Day, from the Society of Professional Journalists -- that feature also earned second place in the "Best Staff Coverage/Documentary Reporting" category from the Georgia Associated Press; "Best Public Affairs Reporting," second place for an hour-long feature exploring the proliferation of guns in society, aired on the Peach State Public Radio Network, from the Society of Professional Journalists -- that feature also won second place in the "Best Public Affairs Reporting" category from the Georgia Associated Press; "Best Specialized Reporting," first place for a special environmental report profiling the SWAP kids, a group of middle school students in Georgia who launched a comprehensive county-wide recycling program, from the Georgia Associated Press; and "Best Feature Reporting," second place for an individual report on the responsibilities gun dealers assume in keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals, from the Georgia Associated Press. WUGA-FM also was awarded "Best Institutional Ad" of the year by the Georgia Press Association, for ads placed in local Athens papers.
The Georgia Center presented two "Teamwork Awards" for the calendar year 1994 as part of the Awards and Recognition Program -- to "The 1990-1994 Conference Activity Closure Project" group and to "The Electronic Classroom Project" group.
"The Conference Activity Closure Project" involved verifying and updating continuing-education-unit (CEU) records and financial audit records for past Georgia Center programs. Members of the group were, by department/division: From the Department of Administrative Services -- Sandra J. Dinnan, senior accounting assistant, and J. Mark Jones, auditor II. From the Department of Community Learning Resources -- Brenda E. Adams, administrative secretary. From Governmental Training of the Georgia Center and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government -- Janet L. Andrews, conference coordinator. From Human Resource Development -- Audrey L. Spivey, administrative secretary. From the Division of Instructional Services -- Jacquelyn H. Hall, senior administrative secretary. From the Department for Program and Conference Development -- Nancy B. Breme, senior secretary; Linda C. Burgess, senior secretary; and Josephine F. Reynolds, office manager.
"The Electronic Classroom Project" involved all of the processes involved in the installation of an instructional studio/classroom. Rohme, utility worker; Michael T. Tiller, skilled trades worker; George Vandell, locksmith; and E. Wendell White, maintenance foreman. From the Division of Hotel and Operating Services -- William E. Evans Jr., business affairs manager. From the Department of Special Event Services -- Beverly A. Bourgeois, activities coordinator. From the Department of Television Services -- Phillip D. Allen, electronic maintenance engineer; J. Mark Baird, electronics technician II; John T. McGaughey III, electronics engineer; Michael J. Pasquale, communications production manager; Danny R. Price, electronics maintenance engineer; and James F. Shehane III, head of the department.
