YEAR IN REVIEW: 1996-1997

Special Staff Awards and Honors


Brewer, Pat B., head of the Department of Evening Classes, and four public service faculty members in the department -- Charles D. Hale, Elizabeth H. Hardaway, Sylvia R. McLaurin, and Nancy P. Thompson -- received the "1996 Research Award" from University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) Region III, for "Assessing the Continuing Education Program: A Comprehensive Model." Brewer's, Hardaway's, and McLaurin's "Creating a Positive Learning Environment Through Faculty and Staff Development" was named one of six "Exemplary Programs" by UCEA Region III. Brewer was also the recipient of the UCEA Region III "1996 Professional Continuing Educator Award" and the UCEA "Adelle F. Robertson 1996 Professional Continuing Educator Award." Brewer served as president of the Georgia Association for Women in Education (GAWE). McLaurin, with Jerry Ann (Jan) Smith, public service assistant in the Department for Program and Conference Development, and Leara L. Rhodes, an assistant professor in UGA's Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, received the "1996 Literary Award" for "You Were Right, Sam Johnson," from the Georgia Adult Education Association (GAEA). McLaurin again served as editor of Practicum, a GAEA publication.

Copas, Ernestine M., associate director for academic credit, served as chair of Region III of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA).

Franklin, Valerie J., conference coordinator, and Kathryn P. Fraser, conference coordinator, both with the Department for Program and Conference Development, were graduates of the 1997 Leadership Development Institute for Professionals in Adult/Continuing Education of the Georgia Adult Education Association (GAEA).

Gilbert, Linda S., human services training specialist II of Staff Development, was elected to the Board of Directors (a three-year term) of the Division of Interactive Systems and Computers (DISC) of the Association of Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

Healy, Michael F., research and planning specialist in the Department of Marketing Services, served as chair of the 1997 Strategic Marketing Planning Competition of the Marketing and Promotion Division of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA).

The Department of Marketing Services won three awards from the University Continuing Education Association Marketing and Promotion Awards program -- a "Gold Award" for the Georgia Center exhibit in Boston in March-April 1996; a "Gold Award" for Independent Study promotional materials (implementation of an overall design), which was shared with University System of Georgia Independent Study of the Division of Academic Credit; and a "Bronze Award" for the Graduate Mailing brochure.

Miller, Martyn J., head of the American Language Program, was a member of the editorial board of International Educator, a publication of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and served as the U.S.-based coordinator of the Overseas Educational Advisors Professional Educators Group of the same organization.

Mills, Helen H., head of the Department of Community Learning Resources, was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

Morgan, Leneva J., public relations specialist with the Department of Marketing Services, was a member of the 1996-97 Leadership Athens class, administered by Athens Area Chamber of Commerce.

Simpson, Edward G., Jr., UGA associate vice president for public service and outreach and director of the Georgia Center, and Grover J. Andrews, associate director of the Georgia Center's Division of Instructional Services, were among the first class of inductees into the International Adult & Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 1996. The Hall, chartered in 1995 as a nonprofit corporation, has as its purpose "to honor and commemorate adult educators who have made lasting contributions to the Lifelong Learning movement." Andrews was also honored by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) with the establishment of the "Grover J. Andrews Research Endowment Fund" to support the "Grover J. Andrews Research Award." The fund recognizes Andrews' contributions to research in the field of adult and continuing education and training. And, Andrews received the "Pinnacle Award" for "lifetime achievement for major leadership contributions to the profession" from IACET.

Wright, Christine E., public service representative with the American Language Program, was elected to the Georgia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (GTESOL) Incorporation Board.

WUGA-FM was honored during the year with multiple awards for programming. The station and staff received the following awards: (a) from the Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association -- "Pacemaker Award," for "Outstanding News Organization, Class B Radio (Medium-Sized Market in Georgia," to the News and Public Affairs Unit; "Best Specialized Reporting, First Place," for the report "Flat Tax," to David A. Bryant; "Best Specialized Reporting, Honorable Mention," for the report "Red Carpet Tour," to Robin D. Hilton; "Best Feature Reporting, First Place," for the feature "Checkoway Profile," to Steven D. Lickteig; "Best Feature Reporting, Honorable Mention," for the feature "Folk Artist R.A. Miller," to David A. Bryant; "Best Public Affairs Reporting, First Place," for the report "Bike Paths," to Steven D. Lickteig; "Best Public Affairs Reporting, Honorable Mention," for the report "Free Internet Access," to Melinda M. Weir; "Best Special Staff Coverage/Documentary, Honorable Mention," for the documentary "Islam and the West," to David A. Bryant and Robin D. Hilton; "Best General Reporting, First Place," for the report "Olympic Torch Relay," to Melinda M. Weir; "Best General Reporting, Honorable Mention," for the report "Wright Shooting Aftermath," to Robin D. Hilton; and "Best Use of Sound, First Place," for the documentary "15 Wild Decembers," to Mary Kay Mitchell and David A. Bryant; and (b) from the Society of Professional Journalists, Atlanta Chapter -- "Green Eyeshade Excellence in Journalism Award, First Place, Feature Reporting," for "Folk Artist R. A. Miller," to David A. Bryant; "Green Eyeshade Excellence in Journalism Award, Second Place, Documentary," for "Islam and the West," to David A. Bryant and Robin D. Hilton; and "Green Eyeshade Excellence in Journalism Award, Second Place, Non-Deadline News Reporting," for "Bike Paths," to Steven D. Lickteig.


Georgia Center Awards and Recognition Program

The Georgia Center's Awards and Recognition Program turned eight during FY 96-97. The program is designed to acknowledge outstanding service. Awards for the calendar year 1996 were: the "Award for Excellence" to G. Denise Burgess, senior administrative secretary, Department of Television Services, and "Outstanding Service Awards" to Joyce A. Fleeman, conference coordinator, Department for Program and Conference Development; Timothy R. Holcomb, utility worker II, Department of Conference and Event Services; Luetrell G. Sims, baker II, Department of Food Services; and Lee N. Williams, food service supervisor II, Department of Food Services.

A special "Teamwork Award" was given to the entire staff and faculty of the Georgia Center for their participation in helping Atlanta and The University of Georgia host the 1996 Olympic Games. UGA was the site of Olympic Soccer, Volleyball, and Rhythmic Gymnastics for the Centennial Olympic Games. During the two-week period during the summer of 1996, the Georgia Center sponsored a number of cultural events and performances and served as one of the main "gathering points" on campus.
