Journal of Public Service & Outreach
Now Available
The Journal of Public Service & Outreach (JPSO), the first journal dedicated to the "third mission" of the academy, began publication with the Spring 1996 issue. A peer-reviewed journal, to be published three times per year -- Fall, Spring, Summer -- by The University of Georgia Office of the Vice President for Services (Outreach), JPSO is designed to create a network through which those in outreach can identify issues, evaluate research, share ideas, and collaborate to enhance their contribution to the publics and communities they serve.
Essayists and their topics for the first issue are:
- "Ernie Boyer: A Eulogy," C. Peter Magrath, president, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC)
- "The Scholarship of Engagement," Ernest L. Boyer, former president, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (Note: Boyer, slated to contribute to the first issue of JPSO, passed away in December, 1995. He approved this submission, which was sent to JPSO by his staff.)
- "The Public's Disenchantment with Professionalism: Reasons for Rethinking Academe's Service to the Country," David Mathews, president, Kettering Foundation
- "The Challenge for Outreach for Land-Grant Universities as They Move Into the 21st Century," Russell G. Mawby, chairman emeritus and trustee, W.K. Kellogg Foundation
- "Strengthening the University's Alignment with Society: Challenges and Strategies," James C. Votruba, vice provost for university outreach, Michigan State University
- "New Approaches to Funding University Public Service and Outreach," Mary Lindenstein Walshok, associate vice chancellor, extended studies and public service, and adjunct professor of sociology, University of California-San Diego
JPSO publishes works written by a wide variety of scholars and professionals and includes articles on applied research, case studies, commentary, innovations, reviews, teaching practices, technical assistance, and technology applications. Submissions are welcomed.
