The Interactive Teaching Network, the Georgia Center, and Distance Education

The Georgia Center has been delivering quality programs at a distance through print media; satellite teleconferencing; and video-, television-, and radio-based programs since it opened in 1957. Through uplinks, downlinks, sessions utilizing the Georgia Statewide Academic and Medical System (GSAMS), a growing list of Web-based instructional initiatives, and related efforts, the Center provides programming and/or services for campus units and others to reach learners in a variety of settings. This issue spotlights the very successful Interactive Teaching Network, a program developed and conducted by UGA's College of Education with funding from the U.S. Department of Education and contributors. The Georgia Center assists by producing the series, which begins its seventh season this November.

Center Director Leaves

Edward G. Simpson, Jr., Georgia Center director since 1983, moved to UGA's Institute of Higher Education on July 1 to become the University's first Distinguished Public Service Fellow. A look back, and forward, with Simpson.

An organization and its People, and the dynamics therein, by Grover J. Andrews, who as of July 1 is the Center's interim director.

Faculty Spotlight

Karen E. Watkins, professor in UGA's Department of Adult Education, is featured. In addition to teaching, Watkins directs the continuing education programs in human resource and organizational development.
