Celebrating 40 Years of Service ... 1957-1997

The year of special "40th issues" of the Georgia Center Quarterly continues.

The Winter 1997 issue looked into the early days of the Center, from the time the concept was first being tossed around by The University of Georgia and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in the early 1950s, to the Center's January 1957 opening. The Spring 1997 issue featured "long-term clients, old friends" of the Georgia Center and its programming, some of whom have been associated with the Center from the beginning, and even before.

This issue presents

a rundown of the 40th anniversary events planned for September;
information on a second Kellogg grant in 1984;
a discussion of the award-winning design and architecture of the original building;
and, in an effort to cover the full spectrum of Center lore,
the history of a non-programming legend--Strawberry Ice Cream Pie.

The Georgia Center was an exciting concept in adult and continuing education from the start (and still is!). In October 1953, The University of Georgia and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan, signed the formal agreement to build the Georgia Center, the second of the "Kellogg centers." There are now 11 such centers--10 in the U.S. and one in Great Britain--including the first one at Michigan State University The Foundation's second grant to UGA, in 1984, included funding for programs at the Georgia Center. That Kellogg grant was matched by the State of Georgia to renovate and expand the Georgia Center complex to its present-day configuration.

Since 1957, the Center has built its clientele to the present day's 200,000-plus (according to the Center's 1996-1997 Annual Report, covering July 1996 through June 1997), through on-campus, off-campus, and distance education programs, and through various support services, as the focal point of The University of Georgia's continuing education efforts.

"Celebrating 40 Years of Service" will include a conference

September 23-25, 1997, as well as events and activities during that week to highlight the Center's past accomplishments and future plans. Check the Fall issue of the Georgia Center Quarterly for complete conference coverage.
