The University of Georgia's president-designate, Michael F. Adams, visited the Athens campus for the first time Thursday, June 26, 1997, to be formally "introduced." Adams, who takes office September 1, comes to UGA from Centre College of Danville, Kentucky, where he served as president since 1989.
Adams' day at UGA included an introduction ceremony on North Campus; tours; meetings with faculty, staff, and students; and a statewide satellite question-and-answer session broadcast from the studios at the Georgia Center. Also featured in the q-and-a, which was linked to five other University System institutions, were Stephen R. Portch, chancellor of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, and Donald M. Leebern, chair of the Special Regents Committee that conducted the presidential search.
Adams succeeds Charles B. Knapp, who left the University in June to become president of The Aspen Institute (see "I've Been Thinking...").
