R. Chapelle Matthews Public Service Complex

The University of Georgia is in the process of building a public service complex named in honor of R. Chapelle Matthews. The complex will include new buildings adjacent to the Treanor House, which now houses the Institute of Community and Area Development; the Georgia Center for Continuing Education; and the Hoke Smith Building and Annex.

Above at the naming of the complex on October 21, 1995 are, from l. to r., UGA President Charles B. Knapp; Chancellor Stephen R. Portch, University System of Georgia ; Georgia Speaker of the House of Representatives Thomas Murphy; Susan Matthews Loy and Vincent Matthews, niece and nephew of R. Chapelle Matthews; Georgia Governor Zell Miller; and UGA Vice President for Services (Outreach) S. Eugene Younts.

Matthews, a native of Athens and a 1933 graduate of UGA, was a member of the Georgia Legislature for 27 years (1949-1976), where he distinguished himself as an avid supporter of higher education in Georgia.

The R. Chapelle Matthews Public Service Complex will bring together a number of service (outreach) units in order to more effectively serve the public.
