Richard B. Russell Symposium:
"Security Challenges in the Post-Cold War World"

The second Richard B. Russell Symposium, entitled "Security Challenges in the Post-Cold War World," was held on October 16, 1995, at The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The symposium featured the distinguished panel of experts above -- from l. to r., Senator Sam Nunn, ranking Democrat on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee; Dr. Robert M. Gates, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency; and Dr. Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. The session was moderated by Judy Woodruff, far right, prime anchor and senior correspondent for the Cable News Network (CNN).

The symposium series (the first one, "U.S. Security Interests in the 1990s," was held in May, 1993) honors the contributions and accomplishments of Georgia's Richard B. Russell, who served in state and federal government for 50 years, as a state representative and speaker for Georgia's House of Representatives, as governor of Georgia, as U.S. senator for 38 years, and as adviser/confidant for six U.S. presidents.

The series is sponsored by the Richard B. Russell Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the memory of Richard B. Russell through the Richard B. Russell Chair in American History, scholarship and teaching awards, other public service endeavors, and the Richard B. Russell Memorial Library at The University of Georgia.

The 1995 session was recorded for broadcast over Georgia Public Television (GPTV) on October 28, 1995. Copies of the proceedings are available.
