UGA Vice President Recognized by Georgia State Legislature

This January, S. Eugene Younts, vice president for public service and outreach of The University of Georgia, was recognized by a resolution of both houses of the Georgia State Legislature (House of Representatives and State Senate). Below is a "combined" text of that resolution (each house passed its own). Note: On January 8, 1997, UGA's Office of the Vice President for Services (Outreach), officially was renamed the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach.

A Resolution

Commending S.E. (Gene) Younts and inviting him to appear before the House of Representatives/Senate; and for other purposes.

Whereas, S.E. (Gene) Younts has served as Vice President for Services (Outreach) at the University of Georgia with utmost ability and distinction for more than 25 years; and

Whereas, he brought significant skills to this land-grant, sea-grant university after achieving distinction as a faculty member at two other institutions of higher education and as a corporate officer in industry, having earned bachelor's and master's degrees from North Carolina State University and a doctor of philosophy from Cornell University; and

Whereas, as Vice President for Services (Outreach) he has provided effective leadership during his tenure in bringing to bear the academic resources of the University of Georgia in improving the quality of life throughout the state; and

Whereas, under his leadership, the University of Georgia has built one of the most comprehensive service (outreach) programs in the nation which today involves every college and school as well as a number of very successful institutes, centers, and other public service and outreach units; and

Whereas, he has devoted considerable energy and imagination in introducing new faculty members at the University of Georgia to the state by initiating the New Faculty Tour program 20 years ago which takes new faculty to the four corners of the state to learn about the people, the leadership, the geography, and the economy; and

Whereas, he has personally been the driving force in securing more than $32 million to support university programs and to construct or renovate several physical facilities in Athens and other locations which translate into more than $3,500.00 every day for the 25 years.

Now, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives/Senate, that the members of this body commend S.E. (Gene) Younts for his years of dedicated service as the Vice President for Services at the University of Georgia and express to him their sincerest appreciation and best wishes.

(House Resolution Only) Be IT FURTHER RESOLVED that S.E. (Gene) Younts is invited to appear before the House of Representatives at a time to be determined by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Be IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Clerk of the House of Representatives/the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to S.E. (Gene) Younts.
