The third Richard B. Russell Symposium brought a distinguished panel of experts to the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in November, to address "U.S. Policy Toward China." The panel included: William Perry, former U. S. secretary of defense; Brent Scowcroft, former assistant to the president for National Security Affairs; Dianne Feinstein, U.S. senator from California; and Sam Nunn, former U.S. senator from Georgia. Serving as moderator for the program was Richard H. Solomon, president of the U.S. Institute for Peace.
The guests discussed the relations between the two nations and addressed the following questions: How should the United States deal with China on such issues as trade, arms control, and human rights? Can these two powers coexist cooperatively and help build a more stable, peaceful, and productive world?
The symposium series honors the contributions and accomplishments of Georgia's Richard B. Russell, who served in state and federal government for 50 years, as a state representative and speaker for Georgia's House of Representatives, as governor of Georgia, as U.S. senator for 38 years, and as adviser/confidant for six U.S. presidents.
The first symposium, "U.S. Security Interests in the 1990s," was held in May of 1993. The second, "Security Challenges in the Post-Cold War World," was held in October of 1996.
The series is sponsored by the Richard B. Russell Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the memory of Richard B. Russell through the Richard B. Russell Chair in American History, scholarship and teaching awards, other public service endeavors, and the Richard B. Russell Memorial Library at The University of Georgia.
