As you begin your journey with Independent and Distance Learning, here are some things that you won't want to miss.
Register
To register for your IDL course, simply fill out the form that follows this orientation. You may submit it online or by mail or fax.
Regardless of the method of registration, it will take about two and a half weeks to process and ship the materials to you. If you have not received your materials in this time, please contact us for more information.
If you have not yet decided which course you wish to take, please visit our online list of course offerings.
Resident vs. Non-Resident Credit
These terms can be confusing for students when completing the Independent and Distance Learning registration form. They do not refer to tuition costs. Instead, they indicate the manner in which the course will appear on your transcript.
If you are not a University of Georgia student, you will earn non-resident credit for Independent and Distance Learning courses. Your grade will generally show up as transfer credit on your transcript. (Check with your advisor for procedures that are specific to your home institution.)
UGA students who take an Independent and Distance Learning course taught by a UGA faculty member may register for resident credit for that class. These courses will be included in hours attempted, hours for average and the cumulative grade point average on your overall transcript. The grades will also be used to determine your academic status and eligibility for financial aid.
Please contact one of our student reps with any questions or to see which method is right for you.
Tuition/Fees/Financial Aid Information
Tuition may be paid in full at the time of registration with cash, check, credit card, or money order.
While IDL does not offer financial aid, you may be eligible for loans, grants or scholarships. Eligibility must be determined by the financial aid office of your home institution prior to registration for an Independent and Distance Learning course.
More information about tuition, fees and financial aid is available on the Fees and Financial Aid page.
Advising
To ensure that you receive the course credit that you expect, we encourage you to speak with an advisor at your home institution before registering for an Independent and Distance Learning course. Because different schools have varied graduation policies, we cannot be responsible for the courses that you choose.
