About the Midterm Examination

(ACCT 2101, Principles of Accounting I, Annette Maddox)

You must submit Lessons 1 through 5 before requesting the midterm. Please resubmit any lessons on which you received an incomplete. Make an appointment to take your examination with a university or college testing facility near you and submit the Midterm Examination Request form to IDL. You will want to schedule three hours for your midterm. IDL will send you a letter of confirmation indicating what materials you may use during the examination and will contact you if there is any problem associated with your request. Be sure to review your Student Handbook for additional important information and detailed instructions on requesting, scheduling, and taking IDL examinations.

The midterm examination will consist of multiple-choice and homework-type problems. The multiple-choice questions will contain concept or terminology questions and short problems. The short problems will require you to compute a numerical answer. Thirty percent of your points will come from multiple choice and seventy percent from problems.

In order for you to be successful on the midterm, you MUST be able to do your homework from scratch. Many students make the mistake of studying with their homework in front of them the entire time. However, you will not be given any templates or formulas on the exam, only blank paper. Thus, it is essential that you fully understand the material before you attempt the exam.

Be sure you show all of your work on the problems. If you get something wrong and no work is shown, I cannot give any partial credit. So, every time you go to your calculator, write it down!

I recommend working the comprehensive problems to study for the exam. Test yourself with Comprehensive Problem 1-5 on page 233 and Comprehensive Problem 6-8 on page 391.

Here are check figures for Problem 1-5:

Trial Balance Total = $272,665 (debits and credits)
Net Income = $33,660
Earnings per share = $2.24
Total Assets = $155,925
Retained Earnings = $61,685
Post Closing Trial Balance = $155,925 (debits and credits)

Here are check figures for Problem 6-8:

Trial Balance Total = $226,197 (debits and credits)
Net Income = $18,058
Total Assets = $115,450
Retained Earnings = $39,345
Bad Debt Expense = $77

Plan on staying the full three hours for the exam. Please use a pencil and bring a calculator to the exam. Good luck!

About the Final

(FDNS 2100, Human Nutrition and Food, Barbara Grossman)

Before requesting a final examination you must submit all lessons. Please resubmit any lessons on which you received an incomplete. IDL will send you a letter of confirmation indicating what materials you may use during the examination and will contact you if there is any problem associated with your request. You will want to arrange to take the final at least 30 days before the date you need your course grade, and you should schedule three hours for your exam, although you may not need the entire time. Remember, you must pass the final examination in order to pass the course, regardless of grades earned on the lessons or midterm. Be sure to review your Student Handbook for additional important information and detailed instructions on requesting, scheduling, and taking IDL examinations.

The final exam consists of 75 multiple-choice questions and one calculation question. It is worth 400 points. The majority of questions will draw on material from Lessons 5 through 8, but you should review how to do the calculations covered in earlier lessons (e.g., percentage of calories from protein, carbohydrate, and fat), as these are necessary for answering questions from Lesson 6. You may bring a calculator with you to use during the examination.

As with the midterm, the majority of the questions cover the same concepts as the self-assessments and written assignments but are not identical to the questions in the course guide. When reviewing the multiple-choice questions, it may be helpful to know not only the correct answer but also why each of the other options is incorrect. Good luck!
