Marta Patiño Douce, Ph.D.

Dr. Patiño Douce was born in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, where she completed most of her studies. She received her M.S. in geology from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1977, and an M.S. in petroleum engineering from the Instituto del Petroleo de Buenos Aires in 1978. She then worked for private industry in uranium mineral exploration, where she headed the laboratory of water geochemistry. Later, she returned to the Universidad de Buenos Aires to pursue a Ph.D. in geology, which she finished in 1990. That same year, Dr. Patiño was designated Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon.

Dr. Patiño, shown here taking a break from the desert heat at “The Window,” a gap in the volcanic formation of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park, Texas, is an igneous petrologist and geochemist. Her studies have focused on the origin and distribution of uranium and rare-earth elements in granitic magmas. The National Atomic Energy Commission of Argentina funded her research in an area of the Mid-Paleozoic Achala Batholith, a granitic pluton in the Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina.

Dr. Patiño considers traveling and camping along the Pacific Northwest coast one of her favorite leisure activities (her travels are the source of most of the photographs in this course guide). Fabric printing and reading science fiction are other activities she enjoys. She is also a fervent fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team.

Dr. Patiño currently devotes all her time to undergraduate teaching, which she thoroughly enjoys. Since arriving at the University of Georgia in 1992, Dr. Patiño has taught courses on physical and historical geology, environmental geology, rocks and minerals, gemology, and the geology of national parks. She strongly encourages open communication with students—distance education students are just a phone call or an e-mail away. Dr. Patiño can be reached at [phone] or at [e-mail].
