Grading Checklist
General Information
- Students are held to a maximum number of lessons per 7 days
according to the number of lessons in the course. Under certain circumstances
a student can appeal to IDL to submit more than the maximum per 7 days.
- Students may not complete a course in less than 8 weeks unless
granted an appeal.
- Students must send lessons to IDL, not directly to you except
in special circumstances. Exams are sent to IDL from the testing site.
- A lesson/exam received by IDL is sent to you within 24 hours
of its receipt. IDL makes a copy of the exam before mailing it to you.
- If you are on the UGA campus, hard copy lessons/exams are
sent to you in a resealable, returnable mail envelope (pouch) and, if elsewhere,
to you at your specific address with pre-paid envelope. If you are abroad, you should retain receipts of all mail returned to IDL, so that you can
be reimbursed.
- E-mailed and web lessons come to your electronic mailbox
and should be returned to the "Lessons E-mail account."
- You are requested to grade the lesson/exam and return it
to IDL within 10 days; be sure to keep a record of the grade and date returned.
If lesson/exam grades are not recorded into the IDL database within 3 weeks
of receipt (whether due to an IDL error, a lost lesson, or a delay in grading),
you will be notified by letter. You should respond to this notification by
phone or e-mail or by returning the letter with your comments regarding the
status of the lessons/exams.
- All grades must be given as letter grades (no pluses or minuses),
though you may also include a numerical grade. If you indicate an I grade,
the student may redo the lesson, sending it back through IDL. However, an
I grade must be changed to a value letter grade (A through F, S or U) before
a final course grade can be indicated.
- If you wish, you may keep copies of the lessons. IDL retains
only the grade record with dates of student submission and faculty return.
IDL cannot record exam or final course grades until all lesson grades have
been recorded.
- IDL subscribes to the academic honesty policy of the University
of Georgia. Contact either Vanessa
Holt or Sylvia McLaurin should you
suspect academic dishonesty as you grade either lessons or exams.
Grading Procedure for Print Assignments
_____ Mark the lesson as appropriate with comments and points
given or subtracted. Be sure to indicate and explain not only what is wrong,
but also what is done well.
_____ Fill in the cover sheet, indicating the letter grade (no
pluses or minuses) and the date. Please both print and sign your name. (Your
original signature, not a signature stamp, is required.)
_____ Put general or summary comments to the student on the
cover sheet and/or on the assignment.
_____ Record the grade and date for yourself. You may also wish
to record the general comments or to make a copy of the assignment.
_____ Return the lesson(s) in the mail pouch, turning the address
card around to show the IDL mailing address, or in the pre-paid envelope.
Grading Procedure for E-mail or Web Assignments
_____ Open the e-mailed lesson from IDL and hit Reply.
_____ Type comments and corrections in the body of the assignment;
enclose your comments in brackets or type them in all caps so that they will
stand out. Be sure to indicate and explain not only what is wrong, but also
what is done well.
_____ Type summary comments at the end or at the beginning of the assignment.
_____ Type the letter grade (no pluses or minuses) at the beginning
of the assignment like so:
Grade: B
_____ Click Send on your e-mail taskbar to return the graded
lesson to IDL.
_____ Record the grade and the date for yourself. You may also
wish to file the graded lesson electronically.
Grading Procedure for Exams
Examinations will come in a confidential envelope to you from IDL. Please remember
that both midterm and final examinations must be kept secure.
_____ Grade the exam, marking errors and especially good answers,
as well as indicating points added or subtracted; you may wish to make minimal
comments on the exam itself; however, the exam will not be returned to the student.
_____ Use the separate "feedback" sheet, which will
be returned to the student, to make comments about the student's performance
on the exam and/or in the course.
_____ Fill out all applicable blanks on the exam cover sheet;
a letter grade should be entered for the lesson average, the midterm exam grade
if applicable, the final exam grade, and the overall course grade, computed
according to the grading criteria stated in the overview of the course.
_____ Sign and date the cover sheet and return the entire exam
to IDL in the envelope provided.
