Faculty Resource Area
Independent distance learning frees students and faculty
from the constraints of meeting for class at a particular place and time.
It also allows students to work at their own pace. Distance learning often
is ideal for adult students who are employed or raising a family full-time.
Additionally, it offers a convenient option for students who travel or
who cannot fit necessary courses into their semester schedule.
The courses offered by Independent and Distance Learning
(IDL) are developed and taught by University System of Georgia faculty.
Students earn academic credit for successfully completing a course. Thus,
each course in our program is comparable in rigor, content, and requirements
to its on-campus counterpart.
Approximately 5,000 students enroll in our program each
year. About half of these students live outside
the Athens area. Most of our students work twenty hours or more per week.
To learn more about students' experience with IDL, take
some time to explore the rest of our web
site.
The Faculty Handbook introduces you to the basics
of teaching with Independent and Distance Learning. If you don't find the
answers to your questions here, you may request
a copy of the expanded print version of the Handbook or contact the Distance Learning Faculty
Coordinator, Dr. Barbara Frieling. Of course, IDL
staff are happy to answer your questions, as well.
