Course Details Introductory Governmental Accounting, Part I and Part II are self-study training courses offering the basics of accounting in a governmental environment. Delivered via the Internet, the course allows you to progress at your own pace, augmented by consultation with an accounting professional, upon request. The courses (Part I, Part II, and Intermediate) must be taken in sequence. Introductory Governmental Accounting - Part I will familiarize you with the basic accounting equation and how transactions affect that equation. You will also learn the elements of financial reports, and be aware of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for state and local governments. In addition, you will learn to record financial transactions using the modified accrual basis of accounting used by governmental funds. You have up to three (3) months to work through the ten (10) course lessons, including a case study. After successfully completing Part I, you are eligible to enroll in Introductory Governmental Accounting, Part II. The Introductory Governmental Accounting - Part II course expands on the concepts you learned in Part I. You will become familiar with basic fund financial statements. You will also learn to calculate revenues and expenditures/expenses under both the modified accrual and the accrual bases of accounting. You have up to three (3) months to work through the nine (9) course lessons, including a case study. Intermediate Governmental Accounting will enhance your knowledge of financial reporting in state and local governments. Rather than focusing on how transactions are recorded in the financial records, Intermediate Governmental Accounting will focus on how transactions are reported in external financial statements required for state and local governments. This course is required in the completion of the Georgia State Certificate Program and the Georgia Local Government Certification Program. In each course you'll work at your own pace and on your own schedule, assessing your knowledge through self-tests and end-of-lesson quizzes that provide instant feedback. Your successful completion of the exercises at the conclusion of each lesson will allow you to progress to the next lesson. Once you have successfully completed all of the lessons, you will have access to the final online course examination. At each step along the way, you'll have access to an accounting professional who will respond to your e-mailed questions. While working with the course, you'll be able to refer to the online help for instructions on how to use the software tools and navigate through the course. For questions about the concepts presented in the course, you will be able to contact an accounting professional using the links provided in the course. Who Should Enroll?
