This web course requires no special technical skills, but it does assume that you have a reliable Internet connection, a recent version of Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, and the basic computer skills needed to browse web sites. Even if you are new to the web, you will find the course easy to use if you take some time to explore and learn to navigate.
To move around within the course, click on any of the buttons on the homepage, then click on a link to enter a new section. Within each section, an Action Menu near the top of your screen will allow you to go to the next page, the previous page, or back to the table of contents.
The heart of the course is the Lessons and Assignments area. Here you will find lessons on "Recruitment and Selection," "Employment Law and Policy," "Performance Management," and "Wages and Benefits." To complete the course, you will read these lessons, taking the multiple-choice quiz at the end of each one. You can re-take these quizzes as many times as you like. You must score at least 70 percent on all four quizzes to receive .6 CEUs for the course.
In the Tools and Resources area, "Helpful Links" will give you a head start in exploring human resources information on the Internet. "Check Progess" is a convenient way to review your activities in the web course, including when you last logged on and what pages you have viewed. "Discussions" will take you to a bulletin board area where you can read messages from other students and post your responses. Since "Human Resources in Local Government" allows students to enroll at any time, there may or may not be other students active in the Discussions when you visit this area of the course, but you can still use it to share your own human resources experiences.
A Course Menu is always available at the left side of the screen. You can use these links to jump quickly to different parts of the course (including Discussions).
The Compile link allows you to format each of the four lessons into a single, easy-to-print document. This can be helpful if you want to study the course material while you are away from your computer.
The Need Help? link will steer you in the right direction if you have a technical support request or if you have questions about administrative issues.
