This Certificate Course was developed and is taught by the Center for Legal Studies.

Paralegal LIVE Lecture
This 84-hour course meets on Fridays (6 - 9:30pm) and Saturdays (9am - 5pm) on scheduled dates at the UGA Gwinnett Campus in Lawrenceville, Georgia (directions will be included with your enrollment confirmation.)

Paralegal Certificate Course LIVE Lecture Description: This intensive, nationally acclaimed program is designed for beginning as well as advanced legal workers. Students will be trained to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of law in which paralegals are in most demand. (Topics subject to change.)

Legal Terminology, Documents, Ethics, and the Litigation Process
This session focuses on the history of American jurisprudence, the theory of law, the legal process, and the nature of litigation. Discussion will cover pre-trial, trial, and post-trial procedures as well as an in depth coverage of legal ethics. Youwill learn how to prepare a Complaint, Answer, Third Party Complaint, and Motion for Summary Judgment based upon tort and contract causes of action.

Introduction to the Evidentiary Predicate
This session reviews the rules of evidence and civil procedure as well as basic interviewing and investigation techniques and the development and use of demonstrative evidence. You will prepare discovery matter such as Interrogatories, Requests for Admissions, and Requests for Production of Documents.

Identifying Relevant Authority
Throughout this session you will learn how to identify relevant law and determine the differences between primary, secondary, mandatory and persuasive authority, compared to hypothetical situations.

Introduction to Legal Research
This session focuses research techniques for use in legal memoranda, motions, and briefs, and you will also review a concise approach to legal research and the West Key Number system.

Legal Research Practice
This session reviews legal research skills with emphasis on shepardizing statutes and case law and an introduction to computerized legal research. You will be given numerous research assignments to be discussed and critiqued.

Legal Writing, Appellate Procedure, and Law Office Administration
In this session youwill concentrate on the preparation and critique of legal memoranda, including an Interoffice Memorandum of Law and Appellate Brief. Youwillalso review citation format and principles of appellate procedure. You will also discuss the fundamentals of efficient law office administration with an emphasis on timekeeping records and file management techniques.

Domestic Relations, Wills and Trusts
This sessionsummarizes the contractual nature of a marriage and learn about separation agreements, dissolution of marriage complaints, and final decrees of divorce. You will also study the basic guidelines for the preparation and execution of wills and codicilsalong with the elements of trust instruments.

Corporations, Partnerships, Contracts, and Bankruptcy 
In this session you willdiscuss the formation of corporations and their management and learn the differences among corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships. Basic principles of contract law will also be discussed with an emphasis upon the formalities required for the execution of an enforceable contractual agreement. The terminology and procedures peculiar to the bankruptcy court will also be covered. Finally, job hunting techniques and job leads will also be discussed.


There are no prerequisites to take the course, but students will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each session. This program will help students increase their office's efficiency, productivity, and billable hours as well as learn new marketable job skills.

Successful graduates will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the University of Georgia and the Center for Legal Studies. To earn your certificate, students must pass six quizzes and successfully complete five legal document writing assignments.

Spring Session 2008: Tuition is $1,089 if you enroll and pay on or before January 11, 2008; $1,139 thereafter.

Summer Session 2008: Tuition is $1,089 if you enroll and pay on or before May 16, 2008; $1,139 thereafter.

Fall Session 2008: Tuition is $1,089 if you enroll and pay on or before September 5, 2008; $1,139 thereafter.

This tuition fee includes handouts and assistance with placement in a voluntary internship for those students maintaining an "A" average and graduating in the top 25% of their class who also desire office experience. Textbooks are not included in the tuition fee.

How to earn your Certificate of Completion: To earn your Certificate of Completion, you must pass six quizzes and successfully complete five legal documents writing assignments with a score of 70% or better. There are no prerequisites to take the course, but students will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each session. This program will help students increase their office's efficiency, productivity, and billable hours as well as learn new marketable job skills.

Your Instructor(s): The program is coordinated by our educational partner, Scott Hatch, J.D. of the Center for Legal Studies. Scott has been offering paralegal programs nationally since 1980. His courses are currently offered at 600 universities and colleges across the U.S. and his "Law for Life" series is featured on cable. He is listed in Who’s Who in California and Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He us the author of several textbooks including Paralegal Procedures published by West/ITP.

The Center for Legal Studies features in an online format the same Paralegal Certificate Course that has been offered for over twenty years at universities throughout the nation. Through your computer, this course is available to students who, because of location or schedule conflicts, are unable to attend the popular live lectures.

Paralegal Part 1 Online Certificate Course Description: This intensive, nationally acclaimed program is designed for beginning as well as advanced legal workers. This 7-week course will cover:
The origins and history of the American legal system
The meaning and application of important legal terminology
Attorney and paralegal ethics
Techniques of jury selection and the jury selection process
How to prepare legal documents including demand letters, pleadings, discovery documents, motions and memos
Significant elements of the substantive law of torts, contracts
The important rules of civil procedure and evidence
How to conduct a legal interview, legal investigation and a legal analysis and perform legal problem solving

Paralegal Part 2 Online Certificate Course Description: takes over where Paralegal Part 1 leaves off. You will learn the advanced skills of legal research and writing, formal and informal advocacy, and appellate procedure. This course will provide you with a working knowledge of legal authority: how it is used in the litigation process and how to locate it through legal research. You will also learn the basics of law office management, substantive law (such as criminal law, domestic relations, real property law, and bankruptcy), and informal and formal advocacy.

This 7-week course will cover:
The importance of precedence
What legal authority is, and which authority is the most important
How to conduct legal research and learn how to use the 4 most effective legal research tools found in virtually every law library
How to Shepardize your authority
How to properly cite your authority
How to conduct computerized legal research so that you can have a law library in your living room or office, if you are willing to pay the cost
Proper and effective legal writing styles
The basic documents for several important substantive areas of law
Advocacy techniques for usage in formal or informal settings, and
How to begin your job search and perhaps begin a freelance paralegal business after your education

Prerequisites for Paralegal Part 2: You must successfully complete the Paralegal Part 1: Introduction to Paralegal Studies, before beginning the Paralegal Part 2 Course.

You benefit from direct interaction with the instructor and other students by way of email and a discussion board.
• You have 14 weeks to complete the online course (i.e., up to 7 weeks to complete Paralegal Part 1 and up to 7 weeks to complete Paralegal Part 2). You must complete both Paralegal 1 and Paralegal 2 to be awarded a Certificate of Completion. (California paralegals may need to complete Advanced Paralegal coursework to meet the requirements of new legislation, California Business and Professional Code §6450.)
You will submit your assignments and exams via e-mail
If you earn a 95% or better average after completing Paralegal Parts 1 & 2, you will be eligible for assistance with placement in a voluntary internship. Contact the Center for Legal Studies for more details.

Once registered, your password and access information will be sent to you on or about the first day of class.

This is an accelerated course. You will be expected to spend an average of 12 hours per week reading and completing writing assignments. Please note that no extensions will be granted for this online course. 70% is the minimum passing score on all tests and assignments for this course. You might consider working ahead in the curriculum if you have the time. You must complete the entire Part 1 and Part 2 with one calendar year in order to earn your Certificate of Completion.

Course Fees and Materials – Online Course: Tuition is $1,089 per person. This fee covers your enrollment in Paralegal Part 1 and Paralegal Part 2. Textbooks are not included in the tuition fee.

How to earn your Certificate of Completion: To earn your Certificate of Completion, you must successfully complete the Paralegal Part 1 and Part 2 courses.

In the Paralegal Part 1 Course, you pass six tests, two writing assignments, with a score of 70% or better. The tests and memos are submitted using the Private Mail tool within the courseware. You will have the opportunity to engage in "class participation" by using the online Bulletin Board tool to respond to the bulletin board assignments throughout the course.

Your final grade will be figured as follows:
The six tests are 50 points each and comprise 60% of your grade.
The one writing assignment is worth 100 points and comprises 30% of your grade.
Your participation in class participation assignments comprises 10% of your grade.

In the Paralegal Part 2 Course, you must complete six tests and one Appellate Brief based on a hypothetical case.

Your final grade will be figured as follows:
The six tests are 50 points each and comprise 60% of your grade.
The Appellate Brief is worth 100 points and comprises 30% of your grade.
Your participation in bulletin board assignments comprises 10% of your grade.

NOTE: Some of the assignments in this course will require that you access a law library. You may visit your county law library, a university law library, or, if you have access to WESTLAW or LEXIS, you may conduct your research using your computer.
