Course Details and Dates

Program topics include:
 •  Terminology of Health Care Interpreting
 •  Spanish/English Linguistic Skills
 •  Health Care-Specific Terminology in Spanish and English
 •  Analysis of the Health Care Provider Environment and Issues Regarding Health Care to Latinos/Hispanics
 •  Understanding the Cultural Aspects of Latino/Hispanic Health Care
 •  Ethics of Interpreting
 •  Development of Integrated Interpreter Skills
 •  Translations of Simple Texts

Each Participant Will Develop Skills In:
 •  Constructing a simple guide of special phrases and guidelines specific to your employment location and specialties
 •  Understanding the Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice (e.g., for example, MMIA)
 •  Creating an effective self-evaluation plan to use daily or weekly to assess your own performance difficulties and successes on the job
 •  Creating a list of resources readily available to you, your employers, and colleagues to use
 •  Understanding how to stay in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act (HIPAA)

Course Prerequisite and Course Requirements
There is no prerequisite other than you must consider yourself bilingually (Spanish/English) proficient. Should you not meet the language requirement, no refund of previously paid course fee will be given. Contact the Certificate Programs office for more details. Timely completion of assignments is required including the successful completion of written and oral assignments. Your attendance is required at all five sessions and the score of 70% or better for the final written and oral examination in order for you to receive your "Certificate of Completion."

About Course Instructor
Mr. Scott King is the founder and director of a full-service language school offering energetic and productive group and individual classes and on-site corporate training in both languages and cultural competency. His popular Medical Spanish and Transcultural Competency courses and seminars are accredited by the American Nurses Association, and have been presented at most major healthcare providers in the Atlanta area, as well as throughout the Southeast since 1997. A former high school and college professor, Scott received his Masters degree in Spanish Language and Linguistics/Educator Training; this expert instructor brings an enthusiastic, interactive and entertaining methodology to all his courses and seminars, and his love and expertise in his subject matter is apparent immediately to listeners wherever he speaks!
