Global TESOL Module

Understand the role culture plays in teaching and learning English.

This 40-hour classroom course explores the nature of culture and the role of cultural factors in the teaching and learning of English as a second, additional or foreign language. In addition to lectures, the course involves interactive study, reading, Internet activities, analysis of textbooks, and exercises on new ways of learning about culture. We will explore cultural boundary crossings, discuss issues of culture and language, and complete of the culture component of the portfolio.

This course, which requires the student to purchase a textbook, can be taken as an individual study or as one of the four modules of the Global TESOL Certificate Program.

Instructor: 

Sarah Anne Shope, PhD, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in teaching English to speaker of other languages. She has been active in developing and facilitating Global TESOL training courses and programs, and her area of expertise includes applied linguistics, issues of culture, methodology for teaching English as a second language and/or as a foreign language, and creative professional writing. As a professional writer, Shope has considerable commercial, literary and academic publication credits.

  • Must have excellent communication skills in English
