Global TESOL Module — Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition

Build a solid linguistics foundation for how people acquire a language.

This 40-hour classroom course uses a modern-grammar approach to language. We will explore the elements of language structure: word/sentence formation, sounds of languages, and creation of meaning. Other topics include the history of languages and process of language development, dispelling of myths about language and an exploration of language differences, commonalities and dialect variations. The course provides a base of knowledge for teachers entering into curriculum and instruction for internationals acquiring English (or any other language).

This course, which requires the student to purchase a textbook, includes lecture, interactive study, reading, Internet activities, exercises in applied linguistics, and completion of the linguistics component of the portfolio. The course can be taken as an individual study or as one of the four modules of the Global TESOL Certificate Program.

Instructor: 

Sarah Anne Shope, PhD, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in teaching English to speaker of other languages. She has been active in developing and facilitating Global TESOL training courses and programs, and her area of expertise includes applied linguistics, issues of culture, methodology for teaching English as a second language and/or as a foreign language, and creative professional writing. As a professional writer, Shope has considerable commercial, literary and academic publication credits.
