Are you interested in learning American Sign Language? Know others who would like to learn, too? There are many reasons to learn ASL:
- Communicate effectively with family and friends who are deaf or hearing-impaired.
- Advance your career—learning ASL can open doors to new employment opportunities or take your career to the next level.
- Learn a second language and spur your intellectual growth.
You can earn an American Sign Language Certificate in just two semesters by:
- Enrolling in American Sign Language, Level 1. If you have previously taken a sign language class and you want to exempt Level 1, please let us know and we will make arrangements for you to take the assessment for Level I to see if you can place into Level 2.
- Attend the Level I class, complete the assignments, and pass the post-class assessment.
- Enroll in American Sign Language, Level 2. Attend the Level 2 class, complete the assignments, and pass the post-class assessment.
In Level I, you will become familiar with basic ASL vocabulary, some finger-spelling, and ASL grammar to construct simple sentences. You will also participate in visual and receptive skill-building and will learn about the deaf/hearing-impaired culture.
In Level 2, you will continue to learn even more sign language gestures, finger-spelling, ASL grammar and vocabulary to express more complex ideas and sentences. Additional information on the deaf/hearing impaired culture will be shared.
Open to students 16 years of age and up.
