Have you ever wanted to write a story, poem, or novel but had no idea where to start? Join us for a week of creative writing, where you'll learn how make the jump from an idea to a finished, publishable work! We'll focus on honing our craft as writers through lessons on refining ideas, using figurative language and imagery, creating a scene and setting, writing dialogue, describing action, and putting it all together into one cohesive text. Each day will include a combination of hands-on activities that help us develop details, trips around campus for inspiration, and of course, time to write. We will also be spending time editing and revising our pieces in one-on-one and group writing workshops, so that by the end of the week everyone in the program will have publishable final pieces! Open to students ages 12-16.

Sarah Heim earned her B.A. in English with an emphasis on novel studies at the University of Georgia and is currently working on her M.A.T. in Secondary English Education at UGA. Sarah's main areas of study include contemporary British and American literature, novel theory, and graphic novels. During the academic year, Sarah teaches several courses for the UGA-Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) programs in Athens. This is Sarah's first year as a Summer Academy instructor.
Students are welcome to bring laptops to class. Student without laptops will spend time in the computer lab and should bring a jump drive to save their work. We will have notebooks and pens available for use, but students are welcome to bring their own writing notebooks to camp if they wish. A detailed list of supplies needed for your camp program will be emailed to you three weeks before camp begins.
