In this intense two-week film "boot camp," you'll write, direct, produce and edit your own movie. During the first week you will be introduced to both beginning and advanced techniques of film production (camera framing and movement, lighting, and sound) through demonstrations and hands-on exercises. You will also learn about acting and how to "direct" actors, as well as compose your script for your group's final film. The second week will be devoted to shooting and editing your cinematic masterpiece. You will walk away with a strong understanding of the production process and the ability to make both practical and artistic decisions to create the cinematic look you are after. All student films will be screened on the last Friday evening and you will receive a final DVD in the mail that includes all class projects. Prior experience is not required, but this program is designed to advance students quickly. Open to students ages 14-17.

This is a two-week camp, and the cost of staying over the weekend is not included in the registration fee. Most students go home for the weekend between camp weeks, but accommodations can be arranged for students traveling long distances or who cannot be picked up. This camp takes place each day at the Georgia Center, but students will travel around by foot, bus and university vehicle to shoot footage for their projects. More detailed information will available closer to the camp start date.

Michael Meindl earned his M.A. in Theatre Arts from Oklahoma State University, and recently completed his M.F.A. in Dramatic Media at the University of Georgia. He works as an Instructor and Graduate Teaching Assistant for the “Intro to Cinema,” “Theatre Appreciation” and “Directing for the Cinema” courses in the Department of Theatre & Film Studies, and previously taught acting and theatre history at Oklahoma State. Michael is the editor and director of several short films, has worked on professional film and television sets, and has directed and appeared in numerous theatre productions. He most recently directed a short play he wrote called Death to Life! that featured a puppet and animated character and served as a motion-capture technician and clean-up artist for an upcoming series on the National Geographic Channel. This is Michael’s second year as a Summer Academy instructor.
You will have access to shared cameras, microphones, tripods and dollies in this camp. With their parents' permission, students may bring their own video camera to camp, but Summer Academy at UGA is not responsible for keeping track of students' personal belongings, and is not liable for anything that gets lost or broken. A detailed list of supplies needed for your camp program will be emailed to you two weeks before camp begins.
