Digital Film School (ages 11-15)

Write, direct and produce your very own movie! In this one-week introductory course, you'll learn the basics of screenwriting, camera work, and video editing as you work with your crew to create an original production. Student films will be screened on Friday evening, and you will receive a final DVD that includes all of your class's projects. Open to students ages 11-15.

This camp takes place each day at the Georgia Center, but students may travel around campus by foot or bus for specific activities. More detailed information will available closer to the camp start date.

Instructor: 

Michael Meindl earned his M.A. in Theatre Arts from Oklahoma State University, and recently completed his M.F.A. in Dramatic Media at the University of Georgia. He works as an Instructor and Graduate Teaching Assistant for the “Intro to Cinema,” “Theatre Appreciation” and “Directing for the Cinema” courses in the Department of Theatre & Film Studies, and previously taught acting and theatre history at Oklahoma State. Michael is the editor and director of several short films, has worked on professional film and television sets, and has directed and appeared in numerous theatre productions. He most recently directed a short play he wrote called Death to Life! that featured a puppet and animated character and served as a motion-capture technician and clean-up artist for an upcoming series on the National Geographic Channel. This is Michael’s second year as a Summer Academy instructor.

Rick Waters is a freelance instructional designer for the healthcare industry, and has produced numerous educational videos for healthcare organizations and consulting firms. He received his M.D. in Dentistry from Georgia Health Sciences University. He produced a nine-part computer-generated video series for the world's largest dental consulting firm in 1998 and has won four awards for video production from The Videographer Awards, the latest in 2010. Rick currently lives with his wife Marie in Athens. This is Rick's seventh year as a Summer Academy instructor.

What you need for camp/program: 

You will have access to shared cameras, microphones, tripods and dollies in this camp. With their parents' permission, students may bring their own video camera to camp, but Summer Academy at UGA is not responsible for keeping track of students' personal belongings, and is not liable for anything that gets lost or broken. A detailed list of supplies needed for your camp program will be emailed to you two weeks before camp begins.
