Using the OLLO Inventor system from Robotics, Inc., you'll learn about the programming of microcontrollers and interfacing of sensors (sound, near-infrared light and touch), the actuation of servo motors and LEDs, and also about multi-channel NIR remote control programming. Through a series of projects, you'll also be introduced to selected robotics design concepts such as mechanical components (plates, brackets, linkages, fasteners, cables and pulleys), mechanical gear-reduction system for electric motors, and conversion of rotational circular motion to a "walking", "hopping" or "crawling" motion using 4-bar linkages.
This course is ideal for students who have some experience in robotics, but we will review the fundamentals of robotic programming on the first day for beginners. Note: Students have the option of purchasing the OLLO Inventor kit through camp, on their own, or renting a robot to share with 1-2 other students during the program. If you choose to purchase the kit, you will take it home with you at the end of the program. Open to students ages 11-14.

Chi Thai is an Associate Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Georgia where he teaches and performs research on Multispectral Machine Vision and Robotics. He earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of California at Davis, and his M.S. in Aerospace Engineering and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northrop University. He currently serves as the Robotics Instructor for the UGA-Duke TIP programs, and the co-coordinator of the JETS-TEAMS Competition at UGA (Junior Engineering Technical Society). This is Dr. Thai’s second year as a Summer Academy instructor.
You will need access to an OLLO Inventor robot kit while in this program (you may purchase or rent one through us, or buy one on your own). A detailed list of supplies needed for your camp program will be emailed to you three weeks before camp begins.
