Meet the Instructors: Open House and FREE Sample Classes

Join us for an opportunity to meet instructors from our classes in Art, Music, Photography, Creative Writing, Foreign Languages and other courses of personal and community interest. Then at 6:30, enjoy a FREE one-hour sample class from one of our instructors. There will be several to choose from. Pre-Registration is encouraged to help us anticipate attendance, but walk-ins are always welcome!

Innovative Wire Jewelry - Level 1 (Classroom)
Instructor: Janis Stephens
Come explore the fine art of wire wrap and create beautiful sterling silver or gold-filled bracelets, pendants, rings, necklaces, and earrings. You will learn to wire wrap faceted gemstones and cabochons in the traditional method. This is a beginning level course, but more advanced students are welcome to attend and will be provided with additional tips and ideas to expand your knowledge base. Prerequisite: Moderate hand strength and excellent eyesight or magnification (Optivisor) required. All tools and equipment are furnished. Supplies run $50 — $250 depending on what you purchase. Innovative Wire Jewelry — Level 2 (Classroom)
Instructor: Janis Stephens
In this next level course, you'll make fun and intriguing bracelets, earrings, rings, findings, and 14K gold filled pendants, as well as sterling silver, brass, and copper wire jewelry that incorporates natural stones, beads, and faceted gems. You may use the tools the instructor provides or purchase your own. Supplies run from $50 to $250 depending on what you purchase. Prerequisite: Innovative Wire Jewelry, Level 1 or approval of instructor. Limited to 13 students.

Intermediate Jewelry Design & Metalwork (Classroom, Jewelry Lab)
Instructor: Barbara Mann
Design and craft your own jewelry! Intermediate students will be guided on individual projects. Students pay a $25 materials fee on the first night. A $30 lab fee (per person) is already included in the course fee. Class is limited to 15 students.

Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry Design & Metalwork or permission of instructor.

Beginning Drawing (Classroom, Lamar Dodd)
Instructor: Bettie Miller
Learn the fundamentals of line drawing, shading, composition and perspective. Students will start working in pencil and pen, but will have the opportunity to move on to pastels by the end of the session. This is a perfect course for people who have never drawn before or who want a basic refresher!

Painting en plein air (at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia)
Instructor: Bettie Miller
Learn to paint en plein air as we explore the Garden both inside and out. Learn how to tone a canvas, do a thumbnail composition, develop an underpainting, and paint in layers. In strategic locations, you will learn to utilize light & shade and cool & warm colors to add vibration to your paintings. One-point and aerial perspectives as well as composition will be taught. Painting can go beyond reality to "imaginary realism." Choose oil, watercolor or pastel.

*In this class, you can choose any medium, including oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, color pencil or pen & ink. Explore beginning watercolor techniques in wash, color mixing, water control and brush work while learning the basic painting techniques of color, composition and design. Techniques will be demonstrated and you will have time to practice and develop your skills. No experience is necessary — don't miss this chance to explore a beautiful new medium.

Drawing & Painting from Photographs
Instructor: Bettie Miller
In this course, you will learn the basics of drawing, composition, and color theory as you turn your photograph into a work of art. Practice the important drawing and painting skills that help you build your piece from the ground up: making thumbnail sketches, evaluating your composition, and creating the underpainting. Once the underpainting is complete, you'll move on to color in the medium of your choice: watercolor, pastel or oil. Bring your own photo, choose one of the instructor's photos, or work from your own imagination!

Supplies
Below is the list of supplies you will need for Drawing & Painting from Photographs, depending on your medium preference. During the first class, the instructor will look at your color set and make suggestions.

If you want to work in watercolor, you will need:
  • a watercolor block or individual watercolor sheets (with paper tape and a board)
  • a set of watercolor paints
  • a cup for water
  • a set of small and medium watercolor brushes
  • a pencil
If you want to work in pastel, you will need:
  • a set of Grumbacher or Rembrandt (permanent pigment) pastels
  • pastel paper
  • paper tape and a board or thick foam core sheet (to mount paper)
  • a pencil
If you want to work in oil, you will need:
  • set of oil paints
  • turpenoid and a cup to hold it
  • set of small, med and large bristle brushes
  • sun-thickened oil
  • a canvas at least 16 x 20
  • a pencil
