Challenging Students Academically
in a College Atmosphere

UGA-Duke TIP Scholar Weekends provide opportunities for academically talented students in grades 8-11 to take short courses during weekend-long programs at the University of Georgia. Courses introduce topics that might not be available in students' local schools, delve into a specific subject with great detail, increase skills and help students consider options for college majors and careers. In addition, Scholar Weekends provide an opportunity for participants to meet university professors, graduate and honors students, and spend time with similarly motivated peers.

Program Basics

  • Open to all 8th-11th graders who have participated in a Duke TIP Talent Search or have been identified as academically gifted/talented by local school criteria.
  • Scholar Weekend participants meet on campus and at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education for two days of intensive academic study.
  • Students enroll in one course to explore material typically not included in school curricula.
  • The weekend course fee of $450 ($395 for day students) covers housing, meals and academic activities. There is a separate, non-refundable registration fee of $25 for each weekend.
  • Get an early bird registration discount of $25 off the course fee when you register by the early bird deadline!
  • Overnight students stay at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel, supervised by UGA-Duke TIP Residential Counselors.

Weekend Schedule

Students and parents check in on Saturday between 9-9:30am at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. After check-in and luggage storage, parents may leave or stay to attend a short Parent Session. At 10am, students will leave to attend classes on the UGA campus. Students will return to the Georgia Center at 8:30pm, when day students will be picked up and overnight students will prepare for the evening activities. Parents should pick up all students on Sunday at 4pm. There will be a brief parent session and reception from 4-4:30pm at the Georgia Center, and then students will be free to leave with their families. A complete itinerary is provided in your confirmation email.

These forms can be downloaded from the web site and/or sent to you by email or U.S. mail.
