"Brazilian-Americans in Georgia and Beyond: a Multi-Disciplinary Symposium" at the Georgia Center
|
Athens, Ga. - "Brazilian-Americans in Georgia and Beyond: a Multi-Disciplinary Symposium" a conference addressing the phenomenon of Brazilian immigration to the United States, with special focus on this community's significant presence in the state of Georgia will be held on Friday, April 25 at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center & Hotel, and Saturday, April 26 at the University Center at Georgia State University. The conference is free and open to the general public but spaces are limited. The Georgia Center is located at 1197 S. Lumpkin St. in Athens, Ga.
This unique academic event will consist of panels, with recognized experts, discussing diverse issues such as recent migration trends, immigrant status, religious life, language and education, Brazilian-American literature, music, and film, and issues related to race, class, and gender. Keynote speakers include Dr. Maxine Margolis (University of Florida), Dr. Alan Marcus (University of Massachusetts - Amherst), and Tania Cypriano (maker of film documentary "Grandma Has a Video Camera"). It is estimated that close to fifty-thousand Brazilians currently live and work in Georgia, particularly in and around the Atlanta metropolitan area. Despite the rapid growth of this community during the last decade, very little scholarly attention has been given to the presence of Brazilians in Georgia.
The purpose of this conference is to address this lacuna directly and, at the same time, serve as a springboard for further research and dialogue amongst interested scholars, government officials, and community and business leaders. The symposium also serves as an inaugural event for an important regional development: the opening of a Brazilian consulate in Atlanta highlighted by the participation of Ambassador Adalnio Senna Ganem, the new consul general for the Southeastern United States.
The conference is sponsored by the Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute at the University of Georgia, the Center for Latin American and Latino/a Studies at Georgia State University, the Office of Public Service and Outreach at University of Georgia and the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia.

Os Brasileiros-Americanos na Georgia e Além: um Simpósio Multi-Disciplinar
Quando? 25 e 26 de Abril, 2008
Onde?
Sexta, 9 ás 6 (Universidade da Georgia Georgia Ctr. for Continuing Education)
Alguns dos principais palestrantes incluem Dr. Maxine Margolis (UForida), Dr. Alan Marcus (UMass-Amherst) e Tânia Cypriano (diretora do documentário "Grandma Has a Video Camera").
