Local children's photographs on display in "Mondays @ the BGC" exhibit at the Georgia Center in May
Athens, Ga. - (April 26, 2008) - The University of Georgia (UGA) Center for Continuing Education is pleased to present "Mondays @ the BGC," a photography exhibit featuring photographic artwork by children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Athens, May 12-20, in the Hill Atrium of the Center. The Georgia Center is located on the UGA campus at 1197 S. Lumpkin St. in Athens. Thirty photographs will be on display.

In partnership with The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Athens, "Mondays @ the BGC" is for Athens area children ages 10 to 15 years old. Boys and Girls Club coordinators selected participants who are interested in pursuing photographic art to share in this program.

Over the course of more than 11 weeks, participants of the Boys and Girls Club, located at 592 Oconee St. in Athens, came to the club every Monday from 4-5:30 p.m. to participate in the project. Working with six volunteers from the UGA Lamar Dodd School of Art, participants were taught about photography from Alison Smith, a MFA in photography candidate. Participants then worked with mentors and took photos around the campus of the club; evaluated their work; learned about correction, film, light, film speed, etc.; and selected their favorite photographs for inclusion in the exhibit, "Mondays @ the BGC."

This project was funded by a seed grant in 2007. However, this year it is a self-supporting project thanks to the contributions from local community businesses, organizations and individual donations.

A private reception for photographers and their parents will take place May 12 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Hill Atrium.

For more information regarding the "Mondays @ the BGC" photography exhibit, please contact Kathleen McDermott at 706-542-7255 or Kathleen.McDermott@georgiacenter.uga.edu.
