Photography Exhibit — "Valley of Hammocks: El Salvador through the Lens of a Peace Corps Volunteer" Photography by Emily Salguero at The Georgia Center
Athens, Ga. — The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel presents "Valley of Hammocks: El Salvador through the Lens of a Peace Corps Volunteer" Photography by Emily Salguero. The exhibit, free and open to the public, is on display Monday, Dec. 1 through Monday, Jan. 5, in the Georgia Center's Hill Atrium. The Georgia Center is located at 1197 S. Lumpkin Street.

A reception for the artist will be held Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m. in Hill Atrium. Music will be provided by Incatepec which plays traditional music from Latin America and Cuba with a jazz influence.

Emily Salguero, born and raised in Athens, Ga., recently returned from El Salvador where she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the youth development program. "I wanted to show a glimpse of my impressions of El Salvador as a Peace Corps volunteer working in the youth development program. I took several photos of children on my front porch, a place where they loved to come and just pass time coloring or playing games. At such young ages the children in these photos have been exposed to extreme hardships such as child labor, lack of food or proper nutrition and lack of clean drinking water. Nevertheless, after spending time with these children and others like them I was moved by their hopes and aspirations for the future," Salguero said.

Salguero holds a bachelor of arts in Anthropology from UGA. She has lived in California, Colorado, Hawaii and El Salvador and she has also had the opportunity to visit Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti and Ecuador. She has a strong interest in human rights especially for women, children, and refugees. She has been involved in Amnesty International since high school and hopes to promote human rights through photography. Emily is currently teaching yoga in Athens.
