"May I fax/mail my entry?"
All entries must be submitted online. You may ask a teacher, librarian, or friend to help.
"I am a teacher. May I have my class discuss the topic before the students write?
Yes; in fact, we encourage brainstorming sessions on the topic. However, when it is time to write, each student must work independently.
"What are the judges really looking for?"
Insight. Innovation. A giving, caring, service-oriented attitude. An essay that is interesting and inspiring, whether it is published in the newspaper or read aloud.
"Why can't I call you on the telephone?"
Most of your questions can be answered by reading the entry instructions and our list of Frequently Asked Questions. You can always email us at latino@georgiacenter.uga.edu. If your question is not answered here and you really need to telephone, call Christine Burgoyne at 706-542-6473.
"I go to school in another state. Can I enter?"
Not this year, but please check next year to see if the contest area has been expanded.
"I am not Latino. May I enter the contest?"
Yes. All students attending public or private high schools in Georgia may enter.
"I don't speak Spanish" or "I don't speak English."
Entries may be in either language. Spanish essays MUST be accompanied by an English translation. You may have as much assistance as you need with the translation.
"Can I submit more than one essay?"
No. Choose the version you like best, and save the others for next year.
"I wrote a really good essay on [another topic]. Can I submit that instead?
No. The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to think about this specific topic.
"What do I get if I win?"
Each of the six regional winners and a parent will receive an exciting visit to the University of Georgia. The event includes a night in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel, great meals, an awards ceremony, discussions, and fun activities. The winner and first runner-up from each region receive plaques and certificates.
"If I win, can I choose other dates for the prize weekend?"
No. This is a group activity for all six regional winners together.
"If I win, how do I get to UGA?"
You provide your own transportation. If you or a parent drive over 80 miles from your home to UGA, the driver may be eligible for a small mileage allowance [subject to approval].
"If I win and my parent can't accompany me, may I bring someone else instead?"
A parent or legal guardian is preferred. Other requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis only if a parent/guardian cannot attend. If approved, the substitute must be an appropriate responsible adult, such as a grandparent.
"Can I win if I will not be able to attend the weekend activity at UGA?"
Yes. You can still be a first-place winner and receive a plaque and certificate. The first runner-up from your region will attend the ceremony in your place.
