Steps to College at The University of Georgia

The University of Georgia’s Steps To College program began as a single summer session in 2002 and has grown into a collection of programs and services targeting middle and high school students whose first language is not English. Originally part of the Board of Regents’ Hispanic Pilot Project, Steps to College has been funded by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach since 2004.

This multifaceted program includes summer programs with separate courses for English-language learners and for fully bilingual students; a variety of after-school and in-school programs; a Steps to College Youth Newsletter; the Steps to College Statewide Latino Issues Writing Contest, and Latino recruitment activities.

The goals of Steps to College are:

1) to improve the academic and English language skills of students whose first language is not English.

2) to encourage these students to graduate from high school.

3) to welcome students into the university environment where they can perceive themselves as lifelong learners who will pursue higher education in the various institutions of the University System of Georgia.

Steps to College is administered through the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel, where it is coordinated by Christine Burgoyne.

How Steps to College Is Unique

1) The activities are interconnected, with participants flowing from segment one to another as they become more and more secure with their perception of themselves as lifelong learners.

2) It is an English-Spanish bilingual program that welcomes students of all languages and ethnicities.

3) Each major segment of the program stresses service, and most have a service component.
