Steps to College Summer Programs

The heart of Steps to College is a four-week, full-time academic summer program on the University of Georgia campus. High-school students whose first language is not English are nominated by teachers and counselors in the Clarke County School District. These lucky students gather for a program of intensive study that expands their command of the English language and helps them prepare for the high-school graduation tests. In addition to classroom time, the program incorporates creative experiential lessons conducted by specialists from a range of University departments and community businesses. To encourage the students to feel at home on the university campus, they eat with university students and faculty and take advantage of campus events, libraries, computer labs, student centers, and museums. Successful participants may receive one Carnegie Unit toward high-school graduation.

In some years, students also practice giving back to the community by planning a day of community service. For many Steps to College participants, this is the first organized experience in giving service to others, and it is always the highest rated activity in end-of-program evaluations. The summer programs also provide service learning opportunities for bilingual college students who work beside the certified teachers to prepare the lessons and supervise events.
