How to Qualify

Researchers in grades 6-12 may qualify for GSEF by advancing from a school-level fair to one of the GSEF-Affiliated Regional Fairs across the state, where they may be selected to compete in Athens this spring. For guidance on which school and regional-level fair a student should attend, including what to do if the student’s school does not have a school-level fair, see the Georgia Fair Participation Policy.

Rules for Conducting Research

Before beginning experimentation, students and supporting adults must familiarize themselves with the rules and evaluate the proposed project. Approval is required for projects involving human participants, vertebrate animals, or potentially hazardous biological agents.

Keep in mind that, to be eligible to compete at a regional fair and GSEF, projects must follow the International Rules for Pre-College Science Research, including adherence to research approval protocol and completion of required forms. Alternatively, students can use the ISEF Rules Wizard to determine which rules apply to their research project.

Additional Resources

Students, parents, and teachers are encouraged to review this additional information. Failure to meet deadlines or follow instructions may result in disqualification.

GSEF Mission Statement:

The Georgia Science and Engineering Fair (GSEF) is dedicated to encouraging all Georgia's teachers and school districts to incorporate active science and engineering research into their classrooms. This allows students the opportunity to develop a love for STEM research, and learn to attack and solve these problems within the framework of organized, logical thought, careful research, and a detailed analysis of facts. This fair is a celebration and showcase of their achievements.
