Comparative Anatomy

Students will dissect representative animals to deeply understand not only how animals in the animal kingdom are similar, but also how an animal’s body is similar to a human's. Students will not only get an overview of human anatomy but discover evidences that depict how all organisms can be related.

Course Learning Objectives/Goals

  • Students will be able to observe and compare the anatomy of different animals in the animal kingdom through dissections and viewing of displays.
  • Students will be able to dissect at least two animals and compare their anatomies in a class presentation…..then ultimately compare those to the human body.
  • Students will also be made aware of the resources and careers in Athens that allow students to further deepen their understanding of comparative anatomy.

Students will check in on Saturday and Sunday morning between 9:45 and 10:00 a.m. Some classrooms are located around campus, and students may travel by foot, bus or university vehicle to get to classrooms or other activities. More details will be available in your confirmation email and in the welcome email sent out three weeks before the course begins.


$200 - This includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

There are no prerequisites for this course.


Jackie Elder HeadshotMy name is Jackie Elder and I am a high school science teacher in the Clarke County School District. I enjoy young people a great deal and would like to continue to inspire and help them to be the best that they can be. I love science and enjoy sharing my love for science with students.I majored in biology as an undergraduate and later obtained a Master's degree in Science Education. I also worked in healthcare for several years before teaching and, therefore, enjoy sharing my knowledge about health careers.
