About this course

Learning objectives

  1. Analyze the historical development and diverse professional roles of the Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC) within various legal and healthcare settings (e.g., law firms, insurance, risk management), adhering to established ethical standards and practice guidelines.
  2. Apply foundational legal principles, including the major systems, types, and sources of law, as well as the law of intentional and unintentional torts, to identify and assess liability concerns for healthcare providers in a range of clinical scenarios.
  3. Evaluate the LNC’s critical responsibilities and strategic contributions throughout the litigation process, from pre-trial preparation and evidence evaluation (including professional negligence cases) to the damages stage and the application of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods.
  4. Formulate effective strategies for the acquisition, analysis, and presentation of medical records and other evidence, utilizing appropriate legal documentation and employing persuasive legal writing and research techniques.
  5. Critique complex legal and ethical issues surrounding informed consent, treatment decisions, criminal law, and specialized litigation areas such as toxic torts, identifying the LNC’s role in case evaluation and consultation.
