What you’ll learn
In this course, you’ll learn how to define key concepts of intellectual property law, including trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets. You’ll analyze case studies to differentiate between various types of protections and apply legal principles to hypothetical scenarios to develop effective strategies. Offered in partnership with CLS by BARBRI, this course equips you to evaluate the effectiveness of different protections in real-world cases and create a simple intellectual property plan for a mock product, integrating concepts across the field.

Learning objectives
Participants will demonstrate the following skills through successful completion of all required coursework and assignments:
- Define key concepts of intellectual property law, including trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets.
- Analyze case studies to distinguish between different types of intellectual property protections.
- Apply legal principles to hypothetical scenarios to determine appropriate intellectual property strategies.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of various intellectual property protections in real-world contexts.
- Explain laws and treaties that affect intellectual property, as well as their limitations and exclusions.
Continuing Education Information
You will be expected to spend an average of 8 hours per week reading and completing writing assignments. Please note that extensions will not be granted for this online course. 70% is the minimum passing score on all tests and assignments for this course. Students may consider working ahead in the curriculum if they have the time. Coursework in Intellectual Property is equivalent to 45 clock hours of study.

Successful completion of Paralegal I and II, or equivalent experience.
