About this course
What you’ll learn
This program trains medical professionals, enhancing their medical and clinical skills to advise law firms, insurance companies, and government agencies on legal medical issues. Topics include expert testimony, healthcare legal concepts, malpractice, toxic torts, product liability, personal injury, wrongful death, criminal law, and workers’ compensation. Offered in partnership with CLS by BARBRI, the course covers forensic testimony, medical-legal problem-solving, and standards of care, helping expand your legal career as a medical professional.

Learning objectives
- Explain the historical evolution and current role of a Medical Professional Legal Consultant (MPLC) within the broader legal framework, distinguishing between major legal systems, types of law, and sources of law. (Understanding, Remembering)
- Analyze the principles of Intentional and Unintentional Torts, informed consent, treatment decisions, and criminal law, identifying specific liability concerns for healthcare providers in various complex litigation scenarios. (Analyzing)
- Evaluate the MPLC’s critical role in the pre-trial litigation process, including the strategic methods for obtaining, reviewing, and analyzing medical records and other evidence governed by the Rules of Evidence and relevant legal documents. (Evaluating, Analyzing)
- Assess the responsibilities of an MPLC in evaluating professional negligence cases and determining the application of the four types of damages available within the litigation process. (Evaluating, Analyzing)
- Examine the unique issues and roles of the MPLC across diverse practice areas, including toxic tort and criminal cases, the insurance industry, private practice, government service, and risk management. (Analyzing)
- Demonstrate the professionalism, ethical standards, and essential communication, legal writing, and literature research skills required for effective MPLC practice. (Applying, Creating)
- Compare and contrast the three different forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution and evaluate the advantages and challenges of various MPLC practice models, including working as an independent consultant or within a law firm. (Analyzing, Evaluating)

Continuing Education Information
Students will be awarded a Certificate of Program Completion for 4.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon successfully completing the course.
This is an accelerated course. You will be expected to spend an average of 8-12 hours per week reading and completing assignments. Please note that extensions will not be granted for this online course. 70% is the minimum passing score on all tests and assignments for this course.

This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 45.00 hours of AAPA Category 1 CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. The program was planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Enduring Material Programs and for Commercial Support of Enduring Material Programs. Successful completion of exams is required to earn Category 1 CME credit.
