Using Data Storytelling to Communicate Impact

This workshop introduces data storytelling as a technique for creating engaging, insightful, and persuasive presentations. Participants will learn how to blend context, data, narrative, and visualizations to transform complex information into clear and compelling stories for community engagement. Examples drawn from Georgia’s juvenile justice programs will illustrate practical applications of these approaches.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Integrate data with narrative techniques by blending context, evidence, and human stories to craft compelling and persuasive messages
  • Design and deliver impactful presentations that use clear visualizations and storytelling strategies to engage diverse audiences, with examples drawn from Georgia’s juvenile justice programs

Jamil Sewell, Public Service Assistant, Carl Vinson Institute of Government

Jamil Sewell joined the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in 2012, where he currently works in the Survey Research and Evaluation Support division as an evaluation specialist. He focuses on juvenile justice, criminal justice, social service projects and behavioral health. Sewell works closely with colleagues and evaluation stakeholders to develop and implement evaluation and assessment projects. He holds a master’s degree in political science from the University of Kentucky.

Brian Simmons, Public Service Assistant, Carl Vinson Institute of Government

Brian Simmons joined the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in 2013, where he is currently a public service faculty member in the Survey Research and Evaluation Support division. He leads the Institute’s survey research team, partnering with organizations to design and implement rigorous evaluation and data collection strategies. Simmons brings advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel, using tools like complex formulas, PivotTables, and Power Query to streamline workflows and uncover actionable insights. Simmons holds a Ph.D. from UGA.
